From the master storyteller comes a tale of gothic mystery as elegantly crafted as the most intricate clockwork. A tormented apprentice clock-maker – and a deadly knight in armour.

little girl called gretel was my favourite person- it was all about a kingdom, a king and queen wanted a baby, the baby died during birth, the king went off to find a new one, he found someone who created it out of clockwork and it looked exactly like a human. Every 5 years it would become sick, with its joints aching- like a clock rusting up. He was told the only way to restore the prince to full health was by giving it a new heart. so the king went on a mission and was attacked by wolves who killed the librarian. they gave his heart to the prince

I loved this book. It was so dark and exciting. You just didn't know what was going to happen! I can't wait to read it to my year 6 class. I love the character of Dr Kalmenius and the way we meet him.

A fantastical tale with well written characters set in a German town many years ago.
It is imaginative and at times, chilling.
I liked the boxes which contained extra information, observations, opinions and facts.

My favourite character was Dr Kalmenius because I really enjoyed doing an evil voice when I read his lines!

This book, although short, was an enjoyable and creepy read! I loved how the writer's story and the old fashioned German town became one reality. It was another excellent tale by Philip Pullman!

I found this read thoroughly intriguing and it stayed with me for days, if not weeks, afterwards! The dark twists and turns are gripping, making it a real page-turner. Also love the little asides that the author makes to the reader making it feel like a shared experience. Would definitely recommend!

Although a fairly short book, it is a gripping, clever story with dark twists but a happy almost moral ending.
I really enjoyed it.

This book is quiet grim but it is really good to read.I would say for a 11-18 year old this would be a good book to read. Schools all around the word might be reading this book.

I was upset when the Clockmaker apprentice couldn't make a single figure.

Another great story from Pullman. I feel it’s a story to be read out loud and enjoyed rather than to be studied as part of an English lesson as it’s all based on the art of storytelling.

This book always wants you to read more and has such a good storyline.

An extremely mysterious tale, by the renowned author of the ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy. It’s the eve of the end of Karl’s clock building apprenticeship and, as is customary, tomorrow he will unveil his greatest creation yet to the town and it will be placed in the grand clock for all the villagers and travellers to see - in fact, many people have travelled from all over the world to see it. It is also the night that the greatest storyteller in town will read his latest masterpiece to the assembled crowd in the inn. The audience gathered includes Karl and his employer. The take is an extremely mysterious one, secretly unfinished, maybe, but very mysterious. This is added to when the sinister clockmaker from the story walks in through the door. After everyone has been scared away but Karl, he leaves leaving only an ingenious clockwork knight to show he was ever there. Can this be the dream come true for Karl or will it become his nightmare?

My favourite part about this book is when fantasy merged with reality. It really took the reader on a journey through a clockwork. The references made to clockwork and how the story unwound was amazing. Even though short, it's packed with new and exciting vocabulary. My class thoroughly enjoyed reading and speculating about the book.

The best part in this story was when Prince Florian came to life because of Grett’s love. The character I did not like in this story was Karl and Dr. Kalmenius because they were selfish and greedy. The moral of this story is to never give up!

This was an OK book. It wasn't the best but I did like it. I think that it was way too short. But I still liked the book!

mystical and magical beautifully written

I quite liked this book because it was interesting but scary. I got scared when Fritz was telling his story and suddenly Dr Kalmeuies ( a character from the story) burst through the door of the inn. My favourite character in this book was Gretl because she had a nice and caring heart and she would do anything for others. I would recommend this book to 10-year-old children.

A thrilling tale that becomes real! It has lots of turns and twists and you can’t put it down. You just want to keep on reading

19 Jul 2021

A short but compelling fantasy by Philip Pullman, using lots of classic German fairy-tale ideas in a new way. Recommended for upper KS2.
