Zeke and Daniel have just been made hall monitors by Principal Wombat. This has nothing to do with the fact that they are monitor lizards. And never mind the fact Alicia, the only other monitor lizard in the school, is also a hall monitor.
Somehow, the three hall monitors must impose order on arrogant lions, excitable seals and super-relaxed pandas. And worst of all, there is Pelicarnassus! A pompous giant pelican and the son of a major supervillain, who inexplicably has it out for the lizards. Can the hall monitor lizards and their new friend, a blind, fearsome red-tailed hawk, protect their school from all manner of outlandish threats?

This is one of those books where you are really not sure what might happen or quite how everything is working but this really hooked me in. I loved the animal characters, the challenging of stereotypes, the injustice and the backstories. The scenes on the bus and in school were beautifully realised, there was a poignancy that Patrick Ness is so good at. This is quirky and unexpected, plenty to talk about in a book club scenario. I feel would work best for Year 4 plus but could easily work as prompt for debate in older year groups.
Award winning Patrick Ness writing for a younger audience. Uses animals to deal with topics such as bullying, self confidence and depression in a safe 'soft' way.
Good upper primary school title -for those who have enjoyed Louis Sachar
Wow what an amazing read! Such a departure from his usual work beneath its kooky exterior are real issues. These are not rammed in your face or an afterthought but are woven into the novel. It’s funny, it’s quirky, it has the country of France! An absolute pleasure to read would recommend to anyone!
I found this book very funny and it makes you read more pages. This book is non-fiction. I would recommend to someone how reads non-fiction books like me.
