Two villains, one girl, and a deadly battle for happily ever after.
Evangeline Fox ventured to the Magnificent North in search of her happy ending, and it seems as if she has it. She’s married to a handsome prince and lives in a legendary castle. But Evangeline has no idea of the devastating price she’s paid for this fairytale. She doesn’t know what she has lost, and her husband is determined to make sure she never finds out . . . but first he must kill Jacks, the Prince of Hearts. Blood will be shed, hearts will be stolen, and true love will be put to the test in A Curse for True Love, the breathlessly anticipated conclusion to the Once Upon A Broken Heart trilogy. Stephanie Garber has done it again with "A Curse for True Love," and let me just say: what a ride! I was hooked from the first page, but, much like with her previous books, I was left craving a bit more character depth. If you're someone who loves fast-paced, whirlwind storytelling, this book will be right up your alley - but for me, I always find myself wishing for a little more time to sink into these characters.
Right off the bat, the plot kicks into high gear, and before I knew it, I was swept away by all the twists and turns. Jacks and Evangeline? Ugh, their dynamic continues to be chef’s kiss. I mean, the chemistry between them is seriously electric: playful, intense, and heart-wrenching all at once. Jacks with his mysterious, villainous charm, and Evangeline, ever hopeful yet fierce. It's hard not to root for them, especially when you know they’re both a little broken and beautifully flawed.
That being said, I did find myself wishing for just a bit more breathing room between the action. I adore these characters, and I wanted to get inside their heads a little deeper. The tension between Jacks and Evangeline? The stakes surrounding the curse? I could’ve done with more moments that dug into their motivations and inner conflicts. Don’t get me wrong - the fast pace makes it hard to put the book down, but a little more emotional depth would have taken it from amazing to unforgettable.
But oh my god, the ending. The ending! My jaw is still on the floor. It’s the kind of conclusion that makes you clutch the book to your chest and just sit for a moment, reeling from everything that’s just unfolded. I won’t spoil anything, but let’s just say Garber knows how to deliver a satisfying (and gut-punching) finale (pun intended, ha ha!).
Despite my small gripe about the pacing, A Curse for True Love was a wild, magical, and romantic adventure. It’s impossible not to get swept up in the enchantment of Garber’s world, and that’s exactly what makes this book such a joy to read. I just wish I could’ve spent a little more time savouring the moments between all the mayhem.
If you’re a fan of Garber’s work, you’ll love this one. Just be prepared for emotional whiplash!
