When twelve-year-old Emmy’s musical family moves to California so her dad can take a job with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Emmy has never felt more out of tune. But when she ends up in a school computer science club, she finds that she can understand code through a language she is familiar with: music. Slowly, Emmy makes friends with Abigail and the two girls start to discover their voices through the programming language of Java.
Extraordinarily crafted, the novel begins to incorporate Java’s syntax and concepts as Emmy, and ultimately the reader, learns to think in code. By the end, Emmy doesn’t feel like a wrong note, but like a musician in the world’s most beautiful symphony.

Abigail was my favourite character and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is listening!
I enjoyed reading this book because the style of writing was changing as the book progressed. Another reason was that the type of writing was code, music and poetry all combined.
Excellent book. Great story, relatable characters, unusual and interesting subject matter (coding and music), and all written in a very different and engaging form. Highly recommended for anyone over the age of about 10.
The story is about a girl called Emmy and she feels out of tune in her new school until she chooses computing instead of music and she finds her tune in coding and stops feeling like a wrong note and becomes friends with Abigail who was always taking music until she starts coding in summer holidays.
I liked to it a lot because
1. I like coding and I learnt even more about it in this book
2. In a way it was relatable because I've always loved music but If I tried to play the violin or sing I would end up sounding like a half strangled horse!
I loved reading In the Key of Code,
I loved how the parents and the child were completely different.
I would recommend it to anyone who likes friendship books. If you want to learn about computing then this book can help in an unexpected way.
