A shy young man leaves his home in rural Turkey to learn a trade in 1920s Berlin. The city’s crowded streets, thriving arts scene, passionate politics and seedy cabarets provide the backdrop for a chance meeting with a woman, which will haunt him for the rest of his life. Emotionally powerful, intensely atmospheric and touchingly profound, Madonna in a Fur Coat is an unforgettable novel about new beginnings and the unfathomable nature of the human soul.

Madonna in a Fur Coat was first published in 1943 and translated from Turkish into English in 2016. The book may be considered a love story, but is much more.
Sabahattin Ali tells a story of unrequited love in 1920s Berlin in the hauntingly sad words of Raif Efendi. Maria is the dominant partner and defines the conditions of their relationship. Raif is content to accept these terms giving his unconditional love during their short time together and after both leave Berlin to return to their respective families.
After a few months the exchange of letters ceases and Raif only discovers the reason 10 years later.
An intriguing tale, beautifully written, that i would have no reservations in recommending to potential readers.
