A story about finding friendship when you’re lonely - and hope when all you feel is fear. Twelve-year-old Matthew is trapped in his bedroom by crippling OCD, spending most of his time staring out of his window as the inhabitants of Chestnut Close go about their business. Until the day he is the last person to see his next door neighbour’s toddler, Teddy, before he goes missing. Matthew must turn detective and unravel the mystery of Teddy’s disappearance – with the help of a brilliant cast of supporting characters. Page-turning, heartbreaking, but ultimately life-affirming, this story is perfect for fans of Can You See Me, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and Wonder. ""A genuinely clever mystery"" – Robin Stevens, author of the Murder Most Unladylike series. ""A great cast of characters and an intriguing mystery – I loved it!"" Ross Welford, author of Time Travelling with a Hamster. A sensitive, empathetic portrayal of living with OCD. This is a book that will make you laugh and cry. The Goldfish Boy was shortlisted for many awards and became one of the biggest children’s books of 2017.

The story is about a young child going missing and the main character’s battle with OCD. I really enjoyed the book and feel like it taught me what life might be like for someone living with OCD. I cried at the end!

Love this book!

Matthew is 12 and has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). He doesn't go to school because of it and spends most of his time in his room, watching the neighbourhood out his window. There is a "lion" in the corner of the ceiling made of wallpaper that he names the Wallpaper Lion and later in the book carries its "eye" around as a good luck charm. His neighbour's two grandchildren Casey and Teddy come round to stay with him. Matthew watches the two children playing in the garden a lot. One day, Teddy, the two-year-old, goes missing. With the help of neighbours and classmates Jake and Melody, Matthew launches an investigation to try and find the kidnapper, however this sparks bad memories due to the fact that Matthew had a baby brother but he died. Matthew thinks this is because he had chickenpox and somehow infected his mother, indirectly killing the baby, and so cleans obsessively, stating that "if he doesn't keep clean things will get dirty and dirty means illness and illness means death".
To everyone's surprise, P.E teacher Gordon and his wife Penny are found to have been the kidnappers of Teddy. Matthew finds this out due to there being a sticky handprint on their window and puts two and two together. Would recommend this book. 37/10!!

A cracking mystery, this book shows the perspective of a tween living with OCD. I often shared the boys emotions while reading this book.

I didn't like the illustrations but the story made up for it. Quite emotional and I can relate to Matthew - at times I have 'magical' thinking.

This book is very interesting and full of mystery. I like it because I really like mysterious books, and in this one a toddler goes missing! The main character is called Matthew, also known as goldfish boy. He has OCD, which means he is afraid of germs. I rate this book 3 stars because it talks a lot about Matthew cleaning and watching people from his window, but I do recommend it, especially to people who like books with mystery.

Loved this book - really cared about the characters and wanted the best outcome for Mathew.
Includes sensitive topics such as dealing with OCD and experiencing death of a loved one, which it handles sensitvely.

This is a fiction book, with Matty being my favourite character. He is a confused, misunderstood young boy! I would definitely recommend!

Fantastic book! I loved reading this - it really put OCD into a child perspective and I hope children can read it to understand how it can affect others so much. Loved the writing style- it’s a read which keeps you guessing at every stage and the characters really come to life! I’d really recommend!

This was a good "page turner" with an interesting mystery story as well as the important story of a boy getting help for a mental illness. As the story unfolds, the boy's struggles are unpicked as he starts his recovery.

Matthew finds himself investigating the disappearance of the toddler next door when all he really wants to do is stay in his room and stay clean. A brilliant mystery story with friendship, adventure and excitement. I really liked this book as there was a twist at the end that I did not expect and recommend it to boys and girls from age 8 up.

I thought this was great as a young readers mystery type story. I also thought it was great at introducing children to OCD and what that actually is.

I’ve looked at Lisa Thompson books for a long time and never picked one up to read it. Then my daughter read this book and suggested that I read it for the Library. I really liked it and we now have a few Lisa Thompson books in the Library. My daughter is a fan and has read most of her books now. 📚

I really do recommend this. Matthew has OCD and is brave for himself. If you do like this, then read A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll. If you've read that but not this, READ THIS!!!
