The Midnight Fox is an atmospheric and heartfelt story, and one of Betsy Byars’ best-loved classics.

And then, this afternoon,’ Uncle Fred said to me, ‘you and I’ll go after the fox.’

Tom, a town boy, is horrified when his parents tell him he has to stay on Aunt Millie’s farm while they are away. He finds country life every bit as strange and uncomfortable as he feared. But soon, he discovers a rare black fox with green eyes, living with her cubs in the forest. Suddenly, the summer is full of excitement. That is, until Uncle Fred decides to go after the fox – will Tom save her and her family in time?

‘I would recommend this book to anyone who loves animals and an adventure story.’ Josh, age 10, Toppsta

‘A stand-out.’ Kirkus

Slow paced and gentle. Captures rural life in the USA at the time. Lovely to see the child’s growth and change, however not sure how many children would enjoy it today.

I liked Hazeline best. I don’t know why though. I just did. I really liked this book because it was breath-taking reading the parts when Tommy’s uncle is trying to shoot the black fox. This book could be a bit longer though. Also, it was sad that Tom never got to see the black foxes again, althogh they were safe.

A city boy, Tom, is sent to spend his summer with his Aunt Millie on a farm. His chance encounter with a black fox introduces him to the delights of the countryside but danger lies ahead...

When the fox wreaks havoc in the hen house, his uncle vows to destroy Tom’s precious fox.l and her cub. He takes the horrified Tom hunting with him!

This is a novel about change, acceptance and self discovery.

Tom was one of my favourite characters because he embraced his change of circumstances but I also liked the stoical, monosyllabic uncle who was not to old to change.

Quite a dull story but good for newspaper headings. Explaons how a fox sees things quite well

I was a great book and I recommend it to people who like exciting books. It was fiction and I liked Tom, the main character best because he was the narrator of the book. It was about when Tom sees a rare black fox (his parents sent him to a farm for they were going on holiday), but Uncle Fred decides to go after the fox.

It is a fiction book, my favourite character was the fox who the boy's Uncle was trying to catch and kill. I probably wouldn't have chosen to read it if my school hadn't recommended it but I did finish it. I find stories about animals very sad.

I liked this book because it has amazing descriptions of the Fox and it has good use of vocabulary that make you never want to put it down. My favourite character is Tom because he loves the Fox and he doesn't want his uncle to kill it. I would recommend this to someone who loves animals.

I loved this beautiful story about a young boy finding an affinity with nature. I can't believe I haven't read it before but was drawn to the nature / habitats / environment themes to make cross-curricular links. The setting in mid 20th century America gives opportunities to discuss cultural and language differences which I know children find fascinating. From the start, the reader sympathises with Tom, the central character, who is complaining to his 'mom' that he does not want to go and stay at Aunt Millie and Uncle Fred's farm while his parents go on a cycling trip. As his experiences on the farm show him how amazing, fascinating but sometimes brutal the natural world can be, Tom discovers his strength and determination to embrace new experiences and face challenges head on.
I plan to read this to my Y4 class and feel it could be suitable throughout KS2. Just one aspect that may need sensitive handling - Tom's cousin, Hazeline, worries about being "too fat" and that this is the reason her boyfriend doesn't want to get engaged.

It's fanny, interesting and exciting. It's convincing. I liked all of the characters.

I enjoyed this book even though it was sad when the little boy died. In the beginning his aunt didn't believe him.
