This tale examines the recurring patterns in the lives of three women who, like the mermaids of Irish folklore, seek to escape the snares of their lovers and return to the watery wilderness of the sea, leaving behind them the responsibility and pain that love brings.

Really enjoyed it. Lyrical, mythical, full of Irish tales and superstitions and three generations of women who keep making the same mistakes. At time their mistakes and the events in their lives are so similar, and as the narrative jumps back and forth between them, I got muddled as to which of them I was actually reading about but maybe that's part of it. I thought it was a lovely story, beautifully told.
