Somebody was in there. Somebody – or some thing . . .

There is no room thirteen in the creepy Crow’s Nest Hotel, where Fliss and her friends are staying on a school trip. Or is there? For at the stroke of midnight, something peculiar happens to the door of the linen cupboard next to room l2. And something is happening to Ellie-May Sunderland, too – something very sinister . . .

A gripping page-turner from a master of spooky suspense, award-winning Robert Swindells. Don’t read this under the covers at midnight!

AMAZING

Room 13 left my Year 5 class on the edge of their seats. Suitable for ages 10 and above, this (slightly dated) tale takes readers on a chilling journey. The atmospheric setting, well-crafted plot and short chapters (always a win) had us eagerly turning pages to uncover the secrets lurking within Room 13.

Very creepy and suspicious i found when the door number was not there in the day but there at night was creepy. It is a fiction book. Trot since he is so humble and does not like to show off. No it is not factual. We read it in class and liked it.Yes i would recommend it to anyone who likes horror.

This is an absolutely fantastic read and would be so enjoyable for any child over the age of 9. Anyone who is a fan of mystery, suspense and even horror will be a fan. It has the added bonus of being set in Whitby, North Yorkshire which would in the teaching of local history or significant places in the U.K. Fliss and her friends are very likeable and relatable characters and readers will enjoy going on this spooky school trip with them.

A creepy story about a second year (Year 11) school holiday to Whitby. Why does Room 13 appear on the stroke of midnight and vanish during the day? Why does Ellie-May start sleepwalking and going into Room 13 every night? And why won't the teacher's believe Fliss and her friends when they tell them what's going on?

Great sense of place and really evocative of the time period. Some sayings used at the time may need explaining and two instances of terminology which are seen as offensive today. One for discussion maybe or a nostalgic read for those of us who remember the 80's!

A sinister plot set at the Crow's Nest Hotel , where every thing is not as it seems...

This book was brilliant - a little bit spooky and I loved the way the author deliberately missed out Chapter 13 and went straight from 12 to 14!

I liked the book because it was about horror, mystery and adventure. My favourite character is Gary because he talks about Dracula and annoys people. It interested me because someone called Ellie May-Sunderland goes into a cupboard with the number 13 and inside the cupboard was Dracula. If anyone else read this book they would exuberate the book.

Amazing story about school children and vampires

I like how the scene is set where it seems like an abandoned set when it isn't and I enjoyed how there were very little clues to do with Dracula I would recommend this to 5+

Straight away we are in the narrators head, being led into a nightmare, or something real?
The story is convincing and touches on other factors that hold it up but do not dilute the narrative. For the year it was written, there are references that some readers may question, but the pace is varied and there is certainly a build up to events that will guide the readers quickly along the path.
The story is predictable but I feel that it is more about friendship than the plot itself, as it is re-telling a well- know tale but more from the point of view of an observer rather than the villain or the victim.
The events were well written and constructed in such a way that they were easily followed, leading to the inevitable, obvious end.
The book shows a snapshot of an 'old school' attitude to pupils which was not hidden at the time, but reading it now, 30yrs later, it is quite shocking.
The character Fliss, goes on a journey throughout the book, I feel that her strength was always there, from the beginning, but her confidence in herself needed to come out. As the story progressed, we definitely saw her actions show us as a reader, that she was getting confident, but as a character she seemed to need a bit more convincing. The other characters were very stereo typical of the time, but the reader did see them actually not be who they were seen as in society. The characters interacted well, an convincing the reader was not hard, but we didn't get to see a lot of depth to them.
The language used encapsulated the theme well, and the suspense building throughout was believable.
I would recommend this title to Key Stage 3.

A great short story for upper key stage 2. Full of suspense and fear! A bit scary for some at the end but good for a whole class shared text.

Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy this book and couldn’t wait to finish it. It’s based on Fliss and her school friends going on a school trip to the Crows Nest Hotel in Whitby. There is no room 13 however Fliss notices that as the clock strikes 12 something strange happens to the linen cupboard and somethings not quite right.

It is a horror story for children and does create some ‘horror and drama.’ However I feel more mystery could have been added to the body of the story; it was quick paced and seemed to skim pass the actual Dracula part.

It kept you on the edge of your seat as was a bit scary in parts. It described Whitby in detail and the characters were good.

An enjoyable and tense book.

This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. This book is about a girl called Fliss and her class are going on a school residential to Whitby and are staying in a creepy hotel called the crow's nest but in the middle of the night one of the children Ellie May Sunderland sleep walks into a cupboard marked with the number 13 and she suddenly becomes really ill could this be linked to the one and only Dracula??? I would recommend this book definitely to 9-13.
