A gripping, prizewinning novel about a girl surviving in a devastated world.

Imagine that a few years from now England is covered by water, and Norwich is an island.

Zoe, left behind in the confusion when her parents escaped, survives there as best she can. Alone and desperate among marauding gangs, she manages to dig a derelict boat out of the mud and gets away to Eels Island. But Eels Island, whose raggle-taggle inhabitants are dominated by the strange boy Dooby, is full of danger too.

The belief that she will one day find her parents spurs Zoe on to a dramatic escape in a story of courage and determination that is handled with warmth and humanity.

This book was the winner of the Branford Boase Award 2001 and marked the start of author Marcus Sedgwick’s multi-award-winning career.

I like how munchkin joins the black family and how zoe sees her baby brother for the first time and knows that he is why her perants didn't come back for her.I also liked the part when zoe just diched dooby and brought munchin insteed. Its kind of sad that she doesnt see william and its annoying that we dont now if william is dead or not .I Hope william is still alive though.I also wonder what happend to dooby.

Thought-provoking. Connections to William Blake make this a novel to reread and Blake to explore.

This book is set when global warming has caused the ice caps to melt, so the sea has risen. It is about a girl called Zoe who tries to escape from an island that has been cut off from England. She uses a boat and rows to another island to try and find her parents, but they are not there. She meets some people and they have a fight with another island so she escapes again with a boy called Munchkin to a city in the west on her boat. She finds her family there and her parents have not come to find her because they had a baby.

Very much reminded me of Lord of the Flies. First book by Marcus Sedgewick I have read and one that made me think about the consequences of global warming we are navigating right now.

23 Jul 2022

I liked the eels because they were funny and Zoe because she is the main character. I would recommend this to someone but say it can be a bit sad because at the beginning she is being chased to leave the island and she didn’t know where her parents were

A great book which looks into the future to highlight the damage global warming poses. The lead character, Zoe, was strong and independent child who was able to deal with the challenges of survival. I would recommend it to all children in Y5/6..

Interesting links to, or themes of floods, survival and who to trust. Elements of a modern day 'Lord of the Flies' and highlighting the problems of global warming from a futuristic perspective.

I would recommend it to anyone! It is amazing!

This book takes a look at one of the possible futures in our path if we continue on the destructive route humans are currently on.
It follows a fictional girl's story as she tries to find her parents, who mistakenly leaves her behind in Norwich - now an island in the middle of the rising seas.

I chose to read Floodland as my year 6 class novel one term as I had seen it on so many year 6 reading lists and we were looking at environmental changes. The class enjoyed the developing plot which moves quickly and includes several very anguished and dark moments which kept them engrossed in the story. The ending when it came felt a little sudden, and my class felt it was a little to neat for the story, so they then wrote their own endings. I was a little disappointed with the writing however, as the language choices and devices used are a little lacking for a year 6 book. For example, at one point children stopped me reading to point out the repetitive use of the verb 'said', and there were other times grammatical choices jarred a little as it didn't feel the writing did the story justice. That said, if you want a dramatic, topical narrative that will prompt lots of discussion this is a good book, just don't use it as a writing teaching tool.

The theme is powerful and topical and provides lots of material for discussion. There are a number of strong characters who reveal hidden layers as the book progresses. I particularly like Zoe and Munchkin and their transformation at the end of the book. An interesting insight into the impact of environment on the ‘nature’ of a character.

I liked floodland by Marcus Sedgwick. It is about England getting flooded in the future and there are only tiny islands left and Zoe is lost and has to find her parents. I would recommend this book.

I really liked Zoe and her bravery. It interested me because I wanted to find out about if she ever found her parents. I would highly recommend this book to someone who is very scared as they will learn that bravely is the key to things.

Just amazing! the book will take your vocabulary to a whole new level because of the sublime vocab and realistic characters. I'd recommend this book to ages 10+ because it is quite a hard book to read.

I think this will be good for children because when they read the book the words wont be that small and it is very intresting because there is a flash back the more you read the more words you know the more words you know the more vocabulary you will know

This is a book full with suspense and is great to read!

13 Dec 2017

I think children should read this because it has a plethora of adventure and amazing emotions go into the book. The adventure are not fantasy like Alice in wonderland or The wonderful wizard of oz it has a lot of sorrow inside. The characters eminate distrust from the core of their being. The ending makes you understand what the whole story is about and the secrets all be revealed.
