Grandfather is off on an expedition to the North Pole to find the Last Polar Bears and with him goes Roo – a dog of character and strong views. The intrepid explorers set sail on the good ship Unsinkable and embark on the adventure of a lifetime.
Eccentric, moving and very funny, their story is told through a series of extraordinary letters.

The book is suitable for KS2 , 7-10 years old.
The story revolves around grandfather who starts on a journey in search of the last polar bears with his dog Roo. The adventure is told through a series of letters.
The expedition is full of humorous moments.
Roo is portrayed like a human as he checks on grandpa doing his housework and is looking forward to ice cream. Grandfather burns the last page of David Copperfield after reading it to keep themselves warm under fierce weather.
I wonder where they actually go to as they see penguins on their way (polar bears are at the North Pole, while penguins are in the southern hemisphere).
By the way, there are 40 days in October in the story. Why? Counting the number of days in an expedition is more important than the number of days in a month.
The fabulous illustrations are drawn by the writer himself and they make the story even more enjoyable. The story stays a while in my mind after I finished the last line. What saddens me even more is the tragedy of the writer’s family in 2007.
The story has a clear structure and theme. The book will surely be enjoyed by many after many years. This is the kind of book that I would recommend.
It’s okay wouldn’t be one of my favourites but I still enjoyed it. I found it quite interesting actually it’s not a book that I’ve read before and there are a lot of reviews about it thing it’s really good. I’ve rated it three times because it’s not one of my favourites, but it’s not like a book that I hate so that’s why I’ve rated it three stars and I definitely think for other children they would enjoy it more than me. That is just my opinion.
A good funny read how he talks about his dog as a person.
My favourite part was when they found bear ridge because that was what they wanted to find the whole time. I really liked Roo because she was funny.
My favourite part was when the granddad and the dog went to the North Pole in the ship, the ocean was rough,
My favourite character was the dog called Roo, because he chased away the wolves. The book is about letters being written to a grandchild, about an expedition taken.
There were 3 polar bears and they met a dog
It was a good book to read
A great experdition over the ice. I love it!
I liked this book because Rufus is very funny. I would recommend this book because it made me feel happy when the Polar Bears were found.
