A stunning new historical children’s novel from Costa
Award-winning author of Asha & the Spirit Bird.

Anushka is furious. As princess of an Indian kingdom, she has watched the British East India Company take land and her family’s most divine jewel – an emerald the size of an apple. So when her father, the Maharaja, decides to visit Queen Victoria at Buckinham Palace, Nush goes too – determined to bring back the gem that can heal her country.  A fabulous new historical direction from Costa-winning and Waterstones-shortlisted author, Jasbinder Bilan. Themes of colonialism and identity, mixed with an action-packed royal mystery.   PRAISE FOR JASBINDER BILAN: ‘A gorgeous sumptuous read from a master storyteller.’ HANNAH GOLD  ‘A light-filled, huge-hearted delight.’ KATHERINE RUNDEL    ’Atmospheric, dreamy, charged with wonder and menace, loss, sorrow and delight.’ TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT  ‘Beautifully written, richly atmospheric and touchingly spiritual.’ DAILY MAIL

I really enjoyed this book. It was a good adventure and mystery story. I loved the main character Anushka as she was a strong female role model. Loved the historical context of it being in the time of the East India Company and it gave an insight into the problems with it's growth in India to the people living there. It organically brought in issues of gender inequality, patriarchy due to cultures and the historical era which would give children good discussion points and important things to reflect on. I would definitely recommend this to children to read.

This is an exciting adventure story set in the reign of Queen Victoria. The central protagonist is Nush, a brave and determined girl, who has grown up as princess of an Indian kingdom. She accompanies her father to London to stay with the royal family, in an attempt to retrieve a stolen emerald. I would definitely recommend this book as it is fast-paced and features a strong female character. It offers the chance for discussions around colonialism. It is suitable for 9-11 year olds.

This is a thrilling historical adventure, covering a period of India's history which I shamefully knew little about, as well as painting an interesting picture of the court of Queen Victoria. The history isn't shoved down your throat, however, but is just a fascinating backdrop to the story. Nush is a brilliantly strong female lead.

Another corker from Ms Bilan!!

Mush sneaks her way to England instead of her brother, with their Maharaja father. Once discovered, it's too late to send her back to India.
In England, she meets the royal family of queen Victoria!

The strong story is excellent, with introduction to many facts about the family and England at the time, that many children may not know.
Highly recommend!

This is the best! It raises awareness of a rural story in India about a company stealing the kingdom's emerald of goddess Lakshmi.
It is based on a true story about people stealing India's emerald.
It is on King Charles's crown right now.
