“Mam, did you think George was,” I say, “a bit … weird?”
“Weird? Yes, I suppose so. But you kids are all a bit weird if you ask me. And to tell the truth, it’d be weird if you weren’t.”
When a new boy joins the class, everyone thinks he’s a bit strange, but he’s brilliant at football and loves crisps, and that’s all that matters to Dan and Maxie. However, the truth about George is stranger than anyone could have imagined … and more sinister, too. Can his new pals help him to become truly free?

Amazing book really recommend it.
Obviously another brilliant book from David Almond. Fun, adventurous and emotional. Shows boys working through feelings, friendship and bravery. I am excited to tempt some of my more reluctant Year 6 readers with this stroke of genius!
This book took me a while to read, but in the end it was a bit sad. I enjoyed reading it and it made me think about how we treat people who are a bit different. I also thought about robots and how they can blend in with humans. I would recommend this book to people who like stories about robots.
It is fiction. My favourite character is George because everybody thinks he is weird.
David Almond is an author who writes, I feel, from the heart. In an educational climate where texts for children are often chosen on the basis of lexile rating or what writing outcomes they may generate, texts like this may be missed and that would be unforgivable. The understanding of children, how they think, feel and view the world, is used so beautifully in the story and like his other fabulous books, it leads the reader to reflect profoundly on what it means to be human. A wonderful book!
