A record-smashing, feel-good adventure packed with heart, humour and Guinness World Records from Costa Award-shortlisted JENNY PEARSON, and Kid Normal illustrator Erica Salcedo
Lucy is a fixer of broken things. But there’s one thing she can’t fix and that’s her unhappy mum. Until she comes up with an INCREDIBLE plan. Along with her best friend, Sandesh, Lucy is going to SMASH a world record.
Because she’s convinced that starry Paul Castellini – Record Smashers TV host and singing legend – is the answer to her mum’s problems. But breaking a world RECORD when watermelons, kumquats, two baddies and a 30 cm shatter-resistant school ruler are involved isn’t quite as easy as Lucy thought. Can she learn that sometimes happiness doesn’t come with a plan?

""One of the juiciest ideas for a story you’ve ever seen and super-miraculously Jenny Pearson makes it every bit as funny and tender as it could ever be."" Frank Cottrell-Boyce

This book was quite fun in most parts but some of it is really not that good. I'll recommend this book this book to someone who's looking for a book to read and clear their mind.
This book really told me that sometimes you don't have to solve another's happiness. You instead can make them feel better and that will be their happiness. And remember, do not attempt to break a world record, ever!
Funny with true love, intriges the reader
I really enjoyed this book about Lucy Robertson who's mum has mental health issues. One day, whilst Lucy is staying at Aunty Sheila's for part of the holidays her aunt organizes a playdate with her neighbors grandson(who turns out to be Sandesh Agrawal from Lucy's school). Sandesh wants to go to a car boot sale with them and then whilst setting up the stall Lucy finds a picture of her mum with 80s pop legend Paul Castellini and they are both smiling. The two new BFFs come up with a plan. Part of the plan is to break a world record and get on a brand new TV show which is judged by Paul. Although since the car boot sale Sandesh has been receiving strange texts on his phone he brought there.
This book is funny and exciting. I really really recommend it.
This was great fun. I read this to the family as our holiday read and we all loved it. The chapter beginnings with world records were fascinating and the story line was powerful and moving while also being very funny.
I rate this book a 5 as it was funny near the end. My favourite character is Sandesh as he is very funny throughout the book. I would recommend this book to someone else as they would find it very funny and very interesting.
I enjoyed the bit when Sandesh played the piano with all different parts, even his bottom!
I liked Lucy in the book because her mum wasn’t very well and she was trying to make her mum feel happy by trying lots of different stuff.
I would recommend this book even though it’s a bit sad.
I found it fun and interesting. My favourite character is Lucy’s mum. I would recommend it to someone. What I liked about it is not everything that happened to the different characters wasn’t always great, but they dealt with those things. There were lots of crazy and unexpected twist and turns.
I LOVED this book because it was adventure and also a lot of comedy I wouldn’t recommend it to people who don’t like comedy
I liked Sandesh the most because he's an amazing friend.
my favourite character was sadness
This is a real page turner filled with both funny and emotional incidents. I know my year 5 children will love it!
it was a very good book and I recommend it
This book is full of records which i want to beat someday.. Love reading it n will read again.
This book is just as fantastic as Freddie Yates - the previous book from this author. They are not connected so no need to worry if you haven’t read the other one. But the message is an equally powerful one.
In this book we follow Lucy who is desperate to find a way to make her mum happy again. This is a heartfelt and also very funny look at adult depression and the impact it has on children.
Throughout the story we follow Lucy and Sandesh as they attempt to break a wide range of world records in order to make it on to the newest TV show - Lucy is positive this will be the key to her mind happiness. However a host of mishaps and a slight encounter with some criminals lead to the realisation that happieness doesn’t depend on others and sometimes it’s ok to be a bit broken.
A fantastic read for children in upper KS2 and above. Would make a great class read also.
This book had me laughing along with the characters but also feeling their pain. The message is not lost in the humour.
