This was a fantastic mystery and I was hooked from the beginning! This is not just your typical murder mystery. As you delve deeper into the story, the world of magic is slowly revealed. There are many facets to this story that a young reader (perhaps 11+) would enjoy. Seth is an engaging hero and the reader will route for his success throughout. Nightshade, his trusty black cat provides an interesting juxtaposition to the typical hero and sidekick dynamic of most adventure tales. This story will keep you guessing until the very end, with multiple twists and turns throughout and even then, we are still left with lingering intrigue. I am eager to read the next magical adventure of Seth and Nightshade.

This is a magical murder mystery book where a boy called Seth has to find out the murderer of a man called DR Thallomius. Everyone thinks it is him but one of the 7 candidates did it. Seth and his talking cat Nightshade must work out who did it and prove that the candidate killed.

Really enjoyable, and incredibly funny. Hard not to fully immerse yourself in this novel and to root for the main character all the way through.

I really loved this thrilling magic/mystery/murder story, with a really good plot.

This book is about a kitchen boy called Seth, who lives and works at, "The Last Chance Hotel". When he bakes an apricot pudding and a guest is murdered, the blame is immediately put on him.

This is about how Seth tries to find the true murderer(with the help of his talking cat), but finds that there is dangerous magic involved.

Seth is my favourite character because he is brave, and he uses his fear as motivation.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a murder mystery and some magic!

I like this book because when I read it, it led me onto a totally different track. My favourite character is Seth the Saucepan scrubber. This book is about when a murder crime occurs at The Last Chance Hotel. When some strange Magicians arrive for dinner, Dr Thallomius is poisoned by the desert that Seth specially made for him. Seth is the main suspect for his death which makes sense because it's his pudding. Makes sense but not true. He is innocent but can he solve the entire mystery with his only ever friend, Nightshade the Cat? Will it really be possibly to solve the crime before the horrible Murderer decides to strike again?

A story about how a humble and simple kitchen boy solves a magical and sinister murder.
My year 5 teacher recommended this to me after I walked into her class asking for books to read over the next few weeks. I thought, "Oh, not another book to do with magic. The whole franchise of Harry Potter should have been enough." But really the plot and other, deeper parts of the storyline were captivating. Yet somehow it took me longer to read it than some other stories I had enjoyed less.

This book was amazing! It is a sort of murder mystery and sort of ghost story.
