This take takes place during Victorian times. Seren Rhys is an orphan child, who has been asked to live with her parents in their Welsh home. She travels alone by train with only a mysterious package which was handed to her by a tall, skinny man. On board the train she opens the package uncovering the broken parts of mechanical toy. When she arrives at the Big House there are no godparents or their son Tomos anywhere to be seen. Only the stern housekeeper Mrs Villiers and three other staff. The house is full of secrets which Seren is desperate to uncover. In boredom, she builds the mechanical toy and discovers its identity, which lead her into a magical Welsh fairy tale. My favourite character is the mechanical toy, who really shows his character once built. I’d recommend this book to anyone who likes a touch of magic and a mix of adventure

I did not enjoy this book because I found it creepy and the start happened all in a blur and quite quickly. I did not finish this book because I couldnt get into it.

I liked this book and the ideas of having a fairy family and a clockwork crow and a castle made out of ice.

I read this book at the wrong time of year. It is a great little wintery tale almost glittering with magic. It reminded me a little of the secret garden. KS2 would really enjoy this. It is quite short so quick to read. Could be good to read aloud, short chapters.

This short chapter book has an interesting plot with a clockwork crow who was a school teacher before magic changed him! The story was slightly hard to get into and didn't grab me as much as I expected.

This was a great fiction book because it was magical fantasy but very realistic and fun. The story is about an orphan girl named Seren who is invited to a manor house. But there is a legend of a spooky family simply called either the family or them. When mayhem stirs can Seren stop it or will it overcome her.

A delightful middle grade quick read. I would have loved to read this as a child and would recommend it to anyone who loves fairy folklore, Victorian tales and mysteries to be solved in large, near-empty houses.

The portrayal of time throughout this book was very cleverly intertwined in the story. The best character was The clockwork crow with his grouchiness, rudeness and boastfulness. I also liked Mrs Villiers' role in the story.
I would recommend this story to any class teacher to read as a class novel as each chapter leaves you wanting to read on. The magical elements combined with vivid descriptions and strong characters made this a really enjoyable book.

It was really interesting and an exciting book to read.
I loved it when Seren had to go to a different dimension
with a clockwork crow to rescue a boy.
My favorite character was the clockwork crow a former teacher.
I recommend it to the kids who love reading about adventures
and mysteries.

A mysterious and captivating story which kept me wanting to read on at the end of each chapter. It was nice the book was quite short which allowed the story to have a good pace to the action. However, the ending was quite abrupt and I was left wanting more but…there are 2 more books in the series to enjoy!

I thought this was a good book and there were features I really enjoyed. I liked the crow the most as I loved how sarcastic he was as it made me laugh. I also liked him because he reminded me of a grumpy old man especially when he was really ungrateful. The book was all a bit of a mystery as you don't find out what has happened at the massive mansion until you are a few chapters from the end. I would certainly recommend this book to someone else as it was a real cliff hanger and action story that I really loved. I would recommend it to anyone between the ages of 6 - an adult. Overall, a fantastic book!

It is one of the best books I have read so far and if you like adventures but mysterious you would definitely enjoy this

The tale of a girl who is given a parcel from a stranger. Heading from her orphanage, Plas-y-Fran isn't quite what Seren is expecting. It seems too quiet. Seren, armed with a toy bird and courage, sets off on her own adventure to discover what happened.

This book deserves a definite five. A page-turner.

I loved this book and enjoyed the thrilling adventure. I thought the fair family were extremely beastly and unfair. I would recommend this to anyone who likes adventure books.

A cleverly written book with many plot twists that keep you interested until the end! Seren is a fun, relatable character despite being an orphan and from a earlier time period. The clockwork crow is funny and clever, and his real identity is kept secret until the end. There are parts of the story that are still unclear, but I imagine this will be addressed in the sequels. Ideal for a child that likes adventure but doesn’t want a long, difficult read.

This is an intriguing book that kept you guessing throughout and really took you in to a different world. It kept me on my toes with its haunting progress and the Crow was a great character that made me laugh with the grumpiness he exuded.

A great book that I would definitely recommend.

It started off slowly but was intriguing with the parcel given to the girl at the station with the warning not to open it, and then it quickly warmed up and became exciting and I couldn’t put it down!
