Feeling lost and alone in a strange new city, Leelu wishes she could fly away back home – her real home where her dad is, thousands of miles away.
London is cold and grey and the neighbours are noisy and there’s concrete everywhere.
But Leelu is not alone; someone is leaving her gifts outside her house – wonders which give her curious magical powers.
Powers which might help her find her way home . . .
Fly Me Home is an incredibly moving portrait of one family’s struggle to adjust to life in a new country. Full of friendship, family and magic, this stunning novel by Polly Ho-Yen, author of Boy in the Tower (shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Blue Peter Book Award) and Where Monsters Lie, is a must-read for 9-12 readers.

In this book, a girl named Leelu moved to the grey, boring London from her home country. Leelu and her family, Tiber, her brother, and their mum, had to leave their dad behind for a reason Leelu did not know. When they arrived at their new so-called home, it was nothing like they imagined. It looked so miserable compared to their old house. Going to a new school and trying to make friends, Leelu faced numerous obstacles in her way. She made a friend called Betsy, who taught her how to play football. She met her next-door neighbour, who found magical objects and had to find her brother when he escaped the house. In the end, Leelu found out that her dad was in prison for trying to convince people that they have their own rights. The next-door neighbour, who is called Bo, flew his way back home with his dog, Dog. To show his appreciation to Leelu, he made her wish come true -- her dad being with her again.
I liked Leleu the best because she is caring and kind and also turned out having so much confidence.
It is great so much action and river is knocked out out in a trash can it's so good there dad gets some phone calls he goes on a (Businesses trip) and some times get a call till one day they notice some thing he thinks he is in trouble and says mum tell us then she breaks and it turns out he was in prison the whole time and there's a magical guy called bo I think he is a ghost
I love Polly Ho-yen!
This book hit me on so many different levels
It took me back to my arrival in the UK (I had been raised in Nigeria even though I was born in the UK) and I could connect with the main character's (Leelu) feelings of the difference between London and my home.
As an educator- the scene where the teacher and teaching assistant were laughing at Leelu really got me angry and reflective as a practitioner.
It's such a well written story that most immigrants can relate to.
I felt sorry for mum. Leelu's unfolding and coming out of her shell was a wonder.
Interesting combination of a contemprary migration story and a magical mystery. Lots of awe and wonder opportunities. The book sldo raised more questions than it answers, at times
This book makes me cry .Iam in love.
I absolutely loved this book and I couldn't put it down. I didn't think I'd like but I started reading it and decided I did. Leelu moves to london from another country (country name not mentioned) without her Dad and someone is leaving special gifts for her. At the end, I found it really different to what I imagined.
Really good book i would recommend it to anyone.
This book is about a girl who has to move away from her home country and her father with her brother and mum. She meets an old man who gives her special little powers and makes a friend too! This book was a cliffhanger, I just wanted to find out what would happen to the girl.
It is brilliant but Leelu is the best of the best. Leelu is kind clever brave and has a little friend of whom she has not met yet. When Leelu meets the wonderful stranger leaving her wonders she is delighted but can she help them fly away home.
Really good bit repetitive with one o& the characters on what they do but kept me on the edge of my seat
I absolutely loved reading this book because it was fun it was interesting and I loved it because it was fictional and also factual in places.I would give this book five stars and I would recommend it to anybody who loves action and sometimes a little bit of humour.
