Cornwall, 1947. Marvellous Ways is a ninety-year-old woman who’s lived alone in a remote creek for nearly all her life. Recently she’s taken to spending her days sitting on a mooring stone by the river with a telescope. She’s waiting for something – she’s not sure what, but she’ll know it when she sees it.
Drake is a young soldier left reeling by the war. He’s agreed to fulfil a dying man’s last wish and hand-deliver a letter to the man’s father in Cornwall. But Drake’s journey doesn’t go to plan, and sees him literally wash up in Marvellous’ creek, broken in body and spirit. When Marvellous comes to his aid, an unlikely friendship grows between the two. Can Drake give Marvellous what she needs to say goodbye to the world, and can she give him what he needs to go on?

A magical, mystical story with beautiful poetic passages and characters that the hunstanworth VIllage Hall Book Group loved. One member had struggled to get 'into' the book but those who'd finished the book absolutely loved this. Set shortly after WWII it is a story of love, loss, grief and hope. This could so easily have been a wishy washy novel but there are dark passages that successfully balance out the story.
Some members had read this novel previously and adored it. Some had also had the opportunity to hear Sarah Winman talk about the novel when she visited Corbridge (Northumberland) in April 2016.
Rating: Scores given on the evening were the highest ever for a Book Group book.
Several 5/5 scores with one member offering a 6/5...and commented that 'if this book was a man I'd marry it'. What a compliment to Sarah Winman's story telling skills!
