I enjoyed this book a lot, it was nice to see characters who had similar stories to mine and tenacious and seemed real. I liked that they weren't perfect or faultless, and it made me love them so much more.
An important story showing a glimpse of what it's like to be in someone else's shoes. I particularly enjoyed it when Gloria described the hardships she'd faced in her career due to her skin colour, it was heartbreaking but fascinating.
There are some uncomfortable topics to read through, but they're harrowing without being overtly graphic and horrific to read which I much preferred, as it held the meaning whilst not being unpleasant for the reader: a testament to the author's skill.
I'm glad this was included in the Penguin Black Britain collection and hope they expand the set with more.
My book group all received a copy of the book for free in exchange for a review, but this has not affected the contents of my review.
