This is am American classic, first published in 1960 and as fresh as the day it was written. It tells the story of Karana, a young girl abandoned on a small island off the coast off California in the 1600s. We learn how she not only survives but thrives as she makes friends with the island’s animals and birds. The most poignant moments are Karana’s efforts to make herself look pretty and we know that it is all vain , there is nobody there to appreciate her skirt made from iridescent cormorant feathers and her polished stone necklace. A beautiful, poetic novel that is an elegy to a lost way of life and a surprisingly modern message about respect for nature. Highly recommended!
Based on a true story, this book introduces a female Robinson Crusoe, in the form of Karana, forced to survive on a beautiful island. Experience her adventures as she builds shelters, hunts for food and interacts with the wildlife. Suitable for KS2.
I really liked it. I love dogs and one of the main characters is a wolf. It also is a bout someone who has to live on an island all by themself. I liked how she adapted and survived on the island. It was non fiction. And I would recommend it to someone else.
I will recommend this book to a friend because this a book about a little girl who is on a island
