The timeless, classic fantasy novel, beloved by generations of readers.

Milo’s extraordinary voyage takes him into such places as the Land of Expectation, the Doldrums, the Mountains of Ignorance and the Castle in the Air. He meets the weirdest and most unexpected characters (such as Tock, the watchdog, the Gelatinous Giant, and the Threadbare Excuse, who mumbles the same thing over and over again), and, once home, can hardly wait to try out the Tollbooth again. But will it be still there when he gets back from school? This edition of Norton Juster’s classic story includes a special “Why You’ll Love This Book” introduction by award-winning author, Diana Wynne Jones.

This is a great adventure story about Milo who meets so many interesting characters that are not ordinary characters and have a special lesson for him on his journey.

This book is really clever and funny. It is about a boy called Milo, who is bored with school because he doesn't really know why he should learn. He arrives home from school and finds a package containing instructions to build a tollbooth. When Milo has built the tollbooth, he drives through it in his toy car and arrives in the Kingdom of Wisdom. In this land he meets king Azaz, the ruler of Dictionopolis and his brother the Mathmagician, who rules Digitpolis. Along with Tock, the 'watch'dog, he sets to free the princesses Rhyme and Reason, because without them things are not going well in the kingdom.

I'm rating this 3 on a usability in class scale. I last read this as a class reader when I was in Year 7. I can remember thoroughly enjoying it- but I can also remember that at times it was only me and my English teacher laughing. I suspect that would be the case now. The picaresque nature of the text, and the jokes which rely on a high level of cultural capital/ literacy mean that I don't think this is very accessible for all. On a personal level, however, I think the book is utterly awesome and bonkers and I loved it.

One of my old favourites that I wanted to reread. This book is brilliant and bonkers. Filled with spectacular word play with strange and wonderful characters. It's fun and the cleverness of it all will entertain both adults and children.

I thought this book was funny, weird, happy and sad. I liked Reason and Rhyme because they help people happy when they are emotionally down , they stood up for their friends and made people happy. I would recommend this book to someone who likes adventures, fun and laughter.

I really really like this book. I have read it twice now as i read it a long time ago ! I had forgotten all the very specific and articulate details lurking in the book and that made it even more interesting. At times i found it was very hard to understand and other times i found the author either spent a long time describing the scene or a very short time in the scene which can be seen as an advantage because it makes the scene really take place. I don’t recommend this book to under 8 as it is quite hard to decipher in parts.

This book uses phrases such as 'Wipe Clean The Slate' and puts them into real life like this: using the previous example, in a separate village everything is normal except the people carry slates. On the slate is their life, whatever they said, did or thought. When they're old and at the end of their life they bring their slate before the king who wipes it clean and within minutes the person is young again in a new life; you can only destroy a person by destroying their slate.

That example doesn't feature in the book (I made it up!) but there are several like it. For instincts Tock the watch dog (who keeps the time!), Dictionopolis (city of words, the words are picked on trees and sold in the word market, it is ruled by King Aaaz) and Digitopolis (the city of numbers, the numbers are mined and then sold in the number market, it is ruled over by Mathlegician, King Aaaz's brother). Dr Discord and Dynne (the two noise makers),the Whether man, Cady, The Giant, The Midget, The Fat Man, The Thin Man, all the Demons and Much more.

But things have gone topsy turvey in the Land of Expectations. During their argumentation King Aaaz and Mathlegician have banished the two peacekeeping princesses Sweet Rhyme and Pure Reason. Without them the country it in havoc so Milo, Tock and Humbug have to go on a quest to bring back Rhyme and Reason to restore peace to the Kingdom of Wisdom.
