I love this book. I like Mr Tom the best.
I would recommend this book to everybody.
Lovely story
This is such a well known classic that we probably all know the story of William, an evacuee who is placed with Tom, an older man who lost his wife in child birth and lives a solitary life in a cottage beside the graveyard. Tom does not want company but he rapidly notices William’s bruises, his thin frame and his dreadful fear. Margorian in her introduction for this new edition summarises it as ‘the story of how William and Tom, two people, hurt by life in very different ways, heal each other.’
This is storytelling at its absolute best, filled with wonderful characters, beautiful observation, descriptions that create a vivid picture of the little cottage in your mind. The story is full of wonderful adventure - rushing round the countryside, cycling on a trip to the beach, children’s plans, dreams and imaginings. It is a story of great and memorable friendship between Tom and William, between William and Zack. It is also a very detailed account of daily living through such a dreadful period of our history.
I would give this book 5 stars.
It was a good an idea of the Second World War . An 8 year old evacuee called William Beach ,who was beaten brutally by his mum, went a little village Called little weirwolt and stayed with a man called Mr Tom Oakley . William met friends called Zach, Ginny and George. William was behind at learning and didn’t know how to read or write . William loved to draw and loved staying with Mr Tom as he was very kind with Willie. Willie was scared of Mr Tom when he first met him as he looked very strong for an old man also his mum beaten him and thought all adults will beat him also he has scars of beat marks from a belt all over his back .I think this a good book as Willie returned to his Mum in London and it has very intriguing information also it has Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s speech of announcing the Second World War.
Late to the party with this one but felt like a classic although some upsetting story lines for MG readers.
Loved it! Will be reading this to my class this term. It made me smile; it made me cry. What an absolute classic.
Goodnight Mr Tom is a book about an evacuee from London who goes to live with an old widower. Although he comes from London as a sickly little boy he slowly flourishes under the care of kindly Tom Oakley. Mr Oakley clearly cares for William Beech, the evacuee, and helps him to thrive. I would recommend this book to older readers as some of the religious views are a little extreme and when William is recalled to London his treatment there is ethically questionable. Although this book, I believe is an excellent recount of life in WW2 I think some elements of it would be better for older reader, about 11+.
This story was amazing because it related to world war two times and how hard it was for some children from London moving into the countryside. This book is non fiction as it is related to world war 2 , my favourite person was Carrie as she was fighting for her education fights
It was really good and I love the emotions this book expresses to the reader u should definitely read!
A marvelous romp through the countryside but you can still feel the effects of the war on the characters. Will’s relationships with Tom and Zach were the highlight of this book. Michelle Magorian is also talented at breaking down complex themes of grief, family, growing up, and abuse.
This was a very emotional book
I really love will.
This book was gripping! I was filled with emotion throughout. This book would make a wonderful addition to the classroom and would tie in well with the topic of WW2. This book does cover some deep topics such as child abuse, suicide and death; however, they are covered in an age-appropriate manner the book would still be suitable for upper KS2.
I have found it very interesting and it has made me want to read more. This book made me really think.
I re-read this book recently, having read it as child. I read it to my 10 year old daughter who loved it. There are some challenging themes, so I recommend reading it aloud to your class or group so these can be discussed e.g , neglect, loss, bereavement, abuse but a timeless classic.
Really good
I really enjoyed reading this book it was part of our class reading we also watched the film.
Very nice novel about how William flourishes into a new person with the care of Mr. TOM
A story I have re read as an adult. Such a powerful story of love and kindness in the midst of the turmoil of war.
great
I liked it but it was also very sad were Willie's friend dies when he goes back to London.
I absolutely loved this book. It was sad in some places because people were hurt or killed during the war but this is how it was. It was lovely in far more places though. The story starts with a boy called William Beech. His mum mistreats him and beats him. He has to be evacuated and ends up billeted with a grumpy man called Mr Tom. Mr Tom is grumpy because he is lonely because his wife and son died. Although Mr Tom really doesn't want Willie to start with, the bond grown through a series of bomb shelters, best friends and trips to the seaside.
Goodnight Mr Tom is a really good book because Mr Tom Oakley, who lives in Little Weirworld, started to be kind to a little boy called William Beech, who was an evacuee from war-torn London. My favourite person in this book is William because he is a very good drawer and he couldn't read or write but with the help of his teachers and Mr Tom, he learnt how to very quickly.
I thought this was a really good book. I have been learning about evacuation during the War and children being sent to live in the countryside. I have done lots of topic lessons on wartime, during lockdown with my mum, and watched the lessons by Western Approaches Museum in Liverpool. My dad told me that his dad was evacuated from London.
I enjoyed this book and my favourite character was Zach because he is funny and very cheerful.
I read this book as it linked to one of our history units about World War Two. It was slow to begin with but I absolutely loved it once it got going. This is an extraordinary book and I loved the two main characters and the way their relationship developed. I would recommend this to Key Stage 2 teachers. The content is mature and I would need to think carefully about using it with a class due to some of the upsetting themes. But ever child should read this book.
This book was very good, it is based on a war time evacuee and he is sent to Mr tom, his mother is very mean and horrible and whips him with a belt that got him nasty bruises. The book can be upsetting in places so I reccomend for ages 10 and a 1/2+
I like this book because William and Tom are happy together
Read this over lockdown from school and really enjoyed it. Quite sad at times.
very good
