First published in 1995, and acclaimed as a modern masterpiece, this first book in the series won the UK’s top awards for children’s literature. “Without this child, we shall all die.” Lyra Belacqua and her animal daemon live half-wild and carefree among scholars of Jordan College, Oxford. The destiny that awaits her will take her to the frozen lands of the Arctic, where witch-clans reign and ice-bears fight. I thought this book was good. I particularly liked that everyone had animals, or daemons, that refelected their personality. Lyra, the main character, has a personality that is very spirited. I would recommend this book to someone who likes adventure books.
A really good book overall but sometimes a little boring. I found myself skipping conversations a lot.
An amazing book beautifully written about a girl’s journey to the North to save her friend and a relative. However evil chasing her…
i like it no favourite characters 80\100
This book was amazing! Every part of the book was vital to another point and it was so suspenseful. This book is amazing but better for older readers as it has some confusing concepts and vocab. I would definitley recommend this book to my friends as it has everything, mystery and suspense, action, friendships and adventures and its got loads of Fantasy! My fav character has to be Lyra and Pan as they are really brave and daring and are so close to each other and have good morals. I also really liked Iorek Byrnison. This book was soooo hard to put down at almost all times and I can't wait to begin on the next book in the series!
I absolutely loved Northern Lights. Following Lyra's story as she makes her way in a world that is similar to ours but very different. A world where children disappear mysteriously, taken by 'the Gobblers' and something in connection to Dust but we're not too sure what that is yet.
Travelling on the back of a ferocious bear, escaping a prison in the deep icy regions of the north and trying to rescue Roger, Lyra's biggest friend all play a part of the journey.
I was intrigued by Lyra's alethiometer, a gadget that helps answer questions regarding the future and, the fact that every h8uman in this world has their own daemon, an animal that accompanies you throughout life and dies with you at the end.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys losing themselves in another world and enjoys a good adventure with fights and the fear that you might not make it out alive.
I think that the plot was very interesting and that adding daemons to the distopian world made it better.
This is a very exciting adventurous book. It leaves you on a cliff hanger at the end. My favourite character was Pan because he is very careful unlike Lyra. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure books.
This book is written incredibly and it made me feel what the characters were feeling. I would recommend this to older, more advanced readers. It’s a very complicated book and it took me about 8 months to read! It was amazing though.
This book was brilliant and full of fantasy, adventure and mystery. I love this sort of book because of all the detail in it and the way that you just can't stop until you find out what happens to Lyra. In the last two chapters, it was quite confusing but it all made sense at the end.
this book was really nice because i got to learn about new words that helped me improve my vocabulary and it helped me learn about what his dark materials are because when my class read i was a rat by philip pullman we really enjoyed it and now that i have read this i really want to read more of his books
Very very cool and exciting
It was very good because i liked how the people had really strong characters
Enjoyed the book and watch the film
Too complicated
It's very good and magical.
Really excellent book with believable characters and thrilling plot twists. Really recommend it for anyone with a heart for adventure, emotion and mysterious ideas.
A very creative book filled with fantastic fantasy, awesome adventures and brilliant bravery
I love this book it is possibly the best book I've ever read. my favourite Character is serafina Pekkala as she helps Lyra when she needs it most.
It's about a girl who has spent her life at Jordan college and has suddenly found herself knowing who her father is and with an alethiometer or Golden compass. She has to find her friend (kidnapped by the Gobblers) in the freezing North and bring him home but ends up doing way more than she bargained for.
This book is about Lyra, and her daemon, Pantalaimon who live wild in Jordan Collage. Her destiny takes her on a journey to the north, in search of a kidnapped friend. This book is breath taking, and extremely hard to put down. I would recommend it to 11-14 year olds.
First, take a blank book. Put in characters Lyra, Roger, Lord Asriel, Mrs Coulter, Tony Makarios and a bunch of people called The Gyptians. Add in witch-clan queen Serafina Pekkala, aeronaut Lee Scoresby and The Ice Bears in Svalbard. And what have you got? Philip Pullman's Northern Lights! 11-year old Lyra
(and all the characters-the adults' don't change)has a shapeshifting creature called a daemon.
Enjoy!
