Penelope Tredwell is the feisty thirteen-year-old orphan heiress of the bestselling magazine, The Penny Dreadful. Her masterly tales of the macabre are gripping Victorian Britain, even if no one knows she’s the author.

It’s 1902. London is looking forward to the new King’s coronation and ignoring the threat of war from across the sea…

Penelope Tredwell, is cursed with writer’s block. She needs a sensational new story or her magazine, The Penny Dreadful, will go under. So when a mysterious letter arrives, confessing to an impossible crime, Penny thinks she has found a plot to enthral her readers: the theft of the Crown Jewels by the diabolical Black Crow.

Ghostly apparitions, kidnap and treason – this is the stuff of great stories. But what if it’s all true?

Spine-tingling historical adventure series with a supernatural twist! From the acclaimed author of The Many Worlds of Albie Bright and The Infinite Lives of Maisie Day.

I had read Christopher Edge's first novel, Twelve Minutes to Midnight, and it honestly drew me into this series. It's mysterious and always grasps the attention of the reader. In particular I like Penny, or rather Penelope Tredwell, who's our feisty female protagonist who finds herself enthralled in numerous mysteries.

This book's plot was very interesting and delved into topics like writer's block and supernatural beings as a result of a queer experiment.... I especially liked the ending - something I had been anticipating since book one!

I would recommend this book to children aged 9-12, who enjoy slightly creepy adventure mysteries. Thank you!

Wasn't sure at the start but got very gripped when all the twists and turns started happening. I particularly like the lead female character.

A young girl called Penelope writes for the Penny Dreadful magazine, hiding behind an actor who is the front for it due to the times. She is having writer’s block until a letter arrives giving her a fantastic story. But is it a story?

I really enjoyed this book. One for the older children at school as there’s harder vocabulary to read. Some interesting twists and turns as Penelope tries to figure out what is going on.
