Wilhelmina Silver’s world is golden. Living half-wild on an African farm with her horse, her monkey and her best friend, every day is beautiful. But when her home is sold and Will is sent away to boarding school in England, the world becomes impossibly difficult. For lions and hyenas are nothing compared to packs of schoolgirls.

It took me a few chapters to get into the story…but I was soon hooked! Towards the end of the book, I couldn’t imagine how Katherine Rundell could possibly end the story! Definitely worth a read. I loved the main character and her determination.
As a Rundell fan, I was amazed to find this book in the library - I didn’t know it existed!
I thought it was very deep but extremely moving, and makes me wish that I had Will's life in Africa. She was really brave in London, also I think that this book gives women a massive sense of empowerment.
Loved it- especially the feisty lead female character. Great depiction of life in Zimbabwe and then contrasting with life in the UK for an orphan in modern times. Highly recommend
This is now known as 'Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms', which is the title I read.
I love Katherine Rundell's writing -- this did not disappoint.
Will is such a fantastic character -- I really wanted things to come good for her.
I would thoroughly recommend it.
This is the story of Wildcat like Will who lives in Zimbabwe. After Will's father, William, passes away, Cynthia Browne sneaks her way into the farm life. Once she has the power one of her first actions were to send Will to England! Will is shocked and horrified and does not want to go (no surprise). Will must go to Leewood College full of girls who are perfect and neat, whereas she is unperfect and untidy, and they automatically hate the newbie. With her Wildcat courage she escapes and begins to live out on the street. Whilst she is free from school, she gets into trouble by begging but the largest amount of trouble is from doing something very naughty indeed. But sleeping rough is not just bad things as she makes friends who may help her final decision.
This was a great book.
I chose to read this book as Rooftoppers and the Explorer are two of my favourite books for second level learners and I have recommended them to many pupils. I enjoyed The Girl Savage, but not as much as these other books. The author uses beautiful descriptions, especially at the start in the section set in Zimbabwe. The reader felt great sympathy for Will and are really rooting for her. Although I felt the ending was a little rushed, it was satisfying for the reader to feel that the was a hopeful future for Will.
Wilhelmina is quite a strong girl and she has a weird name too
It was an adventurous book throughout, but the one thing that I hated was that they left it on a cliffhanger! Overall though it was a great book
Excellent character as always! A fiesty non-conformist female lead character fighting against the odds.
Lovely descriptions of the african landscape and use of Afrikaans language. I would definitely recommend this book to young readers who love adventure stories or those who are struggling with friendship, grief or resilience issues.
Loved the character and plot, but struggled to get in to it as much as Rundell's other books as it's a bit wordier - suited to more able readers. Links brilliantly with Journey to the River Sea for further reading suggestions for children who enjoyed it
Ok, it had a very big change of scenery.
I really enjoyed this book! There were some sad parts at the beginning...but the book was mostly about adventure and friendship. This is a great book and Katherine Rundell is an amazing author, I've read (I think) all her books! Recommend for anyone 10/11+
I enjoyed this book because part of it is set in another country and for me that's what makes it interesting. It was a fiction story and my favourite character was Will. I would recommend this to animal fans and Katherine Rundell.
This title has also been released as 'Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms' which is what the heroine, Will, learns to do in the grounds of a selective English boarding school. Missing the freedom, adventure and friendship of her former life on a farm in Zimbabwe, Will runs away from the spiteful jeers of her 'polished' peers and finds a refuge in London Zoo. The wicked stepmother character and the straight-talking fairy godmother are easy to hate/love and Will is an inspiration to tangled toughies everywhere.
Amazing
I love this book and in places it was really sad but it was one of the best books i have ever read
I loved this book! It is about a girl called Wilhelmina, Wild cat by her father, who is crazy and lives in Zimbabwe 🇿🇼. She gets sent to England by Miss .Vincy to a boarding school to learn her manners but she breaks out and runs away! Awesome read- recommend it to everyone!!!!
Definitely 5/5!
would recommend it to 10 to 13 because there is some different langues in the book
Great story. Will is so brave and determined.
Would recommend.
I LOVED it!! It was an amazing plot with quite a few plot twists and I really like Wilehmia's Character.
this book is written in a way that is easy to read but doesn't take any details away. this is a fiction book and the message it gave was very interesting. i would definitely recommend this to everyone.
My favourite character is Simon because he is brave.
i really liked this book,it was really fun and adventurous. but the reason i didnt give it the full 5 stars was because there were some quite sad moments and everyone that lived with her at the boarding school she was sent to was horrible to her, just because she was quite scruffy looking and didn't know much about how to be posh and grand like the stereotype of a British lady. But in all this was an amazing book I would definitely read again. Katherine Rundell is an amazing author and seeing as I read all her books I can't wait and I'm really hoping that she'll come out with a new book soon! (I will definitely read it!)
My favourite character was Wilhelmina
The best part was when she made friends with Samantha
I loved that she would do anything to go back home. She is very brave and confident. I would recommend this book to people who are shy, the book can help them boost their confidence.
This book is amazing book It is quite emotional and it sounds realistic. I would recommend this book for ages 10-15.
This book was amazing and I felt like I really knew all the characters. It was described so well and reminded me alot of my own African adventures. I loved all the personalities of every character. A very unique and awesome book!
i loved it!
The best thing i loved about this book was the very end where Simon wrote this beautiful letter of how much he misses Will the main character.
The character that i liked best was Wilhelmina(Will).
I would recommend this book to my family because i think its very interesting maybe boring at the start but i really enjoyed it.
amazing story. really recommend
