The internationally bestselling novel that inspired the acclaimed film directed by Peter Jackson.
My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973.
In heaven, Susie Salmon can have whatever she wishes for – except what she most wants, which is to be back with the people she loved on earth. In the wake of her murder, Susie watches as her happy suburban family is torn apart by grief; as her friends grow up, fall in love, and do all the things she never had the chance to do herself. But as Susie will come to realize, even in death, life is not quite out of reach . . .
A luminous, astonishing novel about life and death, memory and forgetting, and finding light in the darkest places, Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones became an instant classic when it was first published in 2002. It inspired the film starring Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon and Saoirse Ronan.

Amazing I couldn't put it down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely love thrilling stories, but this truly broke my heart. It actually describes a very detailed event that could truly happen in life. It was a great read, truly recommend it to those who like tragic but tense reads.
This book is gripping and is able to hook you from the start, although the book is hard going throughout it is also an easy read. It is a very touching book that makes you feel tragedy and embarrass it, even if it is a book it is heart breaking it is also sensitive and gentle
This is a very tense and gripping book. Makes the time pass by quickly as you don't want to put it down because you want to know what happens next. Includes very intense and tragic moments and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.
this is a very intersting book as it expresses feelings of loss and attachment as well as other things. the character that interested me was mr harvey who was quite a mysterious character. and i would definatly recommed this book to others!
Suise Salmon the fictional protagonist is dead, her murderer was a mysterious neighbour who no one expected. The plot surrounds her family's and friend's struggle to cope with her sudden death. Depresingly sad yet hopeful this book offers an alternative look at life after death that will inspire and surprise..
I thought this was a good book being very interesting to read. I would recommend this book because, it shows how society has changed such as how girls can take part in anything they want to know. It is also relatable as there is a split up which alot of people will go through.
I enjoyed this book. The storyline was interesting due to the type of narrative that was used.
yes i would recommend this to people because it can relate to peoples past .
The Lovely Bones was a sad story which I will re-read for exam purposes, personally the storyline was too grafic and upsetting for my tastes. Although having looked at it in Englsih and going into great detail it allowed me to see why people like the book so much. Having analysed the meanings behind words and phrases it has made like the book slightly more. I would not recommend it to anyone as I found it to brutal.
interesting story and plot, covers every charecters life and problems in depth you get a real grasp of the time period (70's) and the issues surrounding this era that the charecters face. Eg Abigal and Lindsey - face oppression as they are women and are expected to become a housewife and a mother nothing more. Jack and buckley experience issues through gender roles as they feel as though they need to protect the women in their lives as men were seen to be strong and to be the protecter in this time period.
Graphic but always interesting. Fiction and Suzie along with MR.Harvey are my favourite characters as there is always something new to learn about them. Would recommend.
I have really enjoyed reading this book because i found the plot very interesting and easy to get into, this made me not want to put the book down because i always wanted to know what was going to happen next. I also enjoyed it because it is based on something that does happen in the real world so it gave me an insight to the effects and aftermath of such a traumatic experience. This is a fictional book and the main character was my favourite person in the book because it opened my mind to how grief effects everyone in different ways and how individuals deal with the after effects.
I sincerely believe that this book is one of my all time favourite. My favourite character was Susie Salmon and I built up a emotional bond with her as she was such an inspirational. It interested me because i'm into quite sad and depressing book and the book satisfied my needs and it also interested me because I am really into heaven and hell stuff
I thought this book was good and parts of it were really interesting. Its a fiction book, and my favourite character was Susie Salmon, she was the main character and narrated throughout so she was the character we knew the most about.
I enjoyed this book due to its unusual omniscient narration and would recommend it to others, however only to people over a certain age as it contains some vivid imagery. This novel promts you to think more deeply about the effects of grief on family and friends close to a victim.
The Lovely Bones is a very thought provoking and tense book. From the very start the book caught me with its explosive storyline. A fiction novel about young girl raped and murdered by her neighbour. It focusses on the themes grief, adultery and sexuality. My favourite character is Susie as the idea of her being dead but at the same time telling a story is quite out of this world.
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone!
It took me a while to get into this book as the genre isn't what I usually read. However, once the narrative developed I found myself really getting into this read. I really sympathise with the main character of susie and I would reccomend this book but for an audience with a similar age to my own.
This is an interesting book to read. It is a fiction book but is a real life situation. Susie is the most interesting characters as she is an omniscient narrator. I would recommend this book to others.
The book is very captivating, it keeps you engaged throughout due to it's intense scenes and emotional sequences. The Lovely bones highlights through a series of themes from love, to guilt.
Fiction.
Mr Harvey.
If it was factual, it would interest me because people live through the emotional distress Susie and her family have due to her rapist victimising her whilst manipulating others.
Definitely.
The book was fairly interesting but it wasn't my cup of tea, also I find Susie Salmon interesting because of the fact that she's dead but she's still technically communicating with the living. I would recommend this book to someone who is interested in life or death or someone who has an interest in books based on a criminal act.
This book explores the effects on a victim's family and the wider community. It also humanises murderer who would often considered to be a monster. The creation of the fantasy world of Susie's heaven and first person omniscient narrative are very effective.
In the final third of the book, Sebold seems to struggle a little and the narrative begins to dry up, however; this is a minor issue as on the whole the book is a really interesting exploration of a very serious event and one that happens on a daily basis.
it was fiction
Well written novel but lacked realistic situations.
I liked the novel but i found it slightly weird at times as it is a very sad story. I would recommend it to others, however I would only recommend it to people over a certain age as it as aimed at an older audience due to the content in it.
An absolutely astounding read, this book moved me to tears. It was beautiful, heart wrenching, bewitching. I watched the film with Soairse Ronan a few years back and fell in love with it but I hadn't realised it was a book up until now - and what a book it is! I couldn't put it down once I began reading it, it was so good. Every character brings a new aspect and offers insight. I would recommend this book to everyone.
I thought this would have a least a slightly happy ending but it doesn't and the sex part in it is irrelevant. I thought it was well written and thrilling and gripping in places, i did not find this enjoyable at all due to the subject matter.
I found this book hard going. It was very sentimental and not very gritty. There was a lot of spying on family members having sex which seemed a odd to me. I wasn't moved by the story and finding out who the killer was, was far too easy for the family. The father just decided on who it was and took it from there. Perhaps if I believed in a heaven it may be different. I wouldn't recommend this book, I'm afraid.
This unusual book places itself between a fiction and a true life novel. It's the story of Susie Salmon, a girl who's brutally raped and murdered by a neighbour. After her death, Susie's soul reaches an in-between place, from which she can follow what happens on Earth, and especially she can see what her loving family is going through in order to find her murderer. Alice Sebold, the author, experienced sexual violence herself, so the book contains autobiographical details.
What I liked most about the book is this sort of connection between Life and Death, and at last, when everything is sorted out, Susie is "released" and can reach a sort of Heaven.
I would recommend this book especially to teenagers, for its delicate yet realistic way of treating th issue of sexual violence.
It was quite good. About how life carries on after death. Told from the point of view of a girl looking down on her family from heaven. Recommend to 13+ girls who like crime and philosophy
