This is the tale of a gene that passes down through three generations and flowers in the teenage body of Callie. Thanks to this gene, she begins to realise she is part girl, part boy. What results is a fable of the intricacies of gender and the untidy promptings of desire.
What a great book. It's a well crafted, well written, heartfelt story that kept me engaged the whole way through. I learned absolutely loads about Greece and its history as well as about being hermaphrodite, physically and emotionally. It's told intelligently and with sensitivity, seriousness and humour. Highly recommended.
