A great read, following the trials and tribulations of an immigrant Chinese family in the USA during the 1990's. The events are told from the perspective of 10 year old Mia Tang, a budding writer, who loves working the front desk at the motel which her parents' manage.
Mia's belief in what's right and the strength she takes from building a network of friends, helps her to overcome the many barriers and injustices she and her family face.
Based on the true life experience of the author whose additional notes are a wonderful supplement to the story.

She is my new favourite author and I have just discovered this is a series. Can't wait to read more. I have really enjoyed reading this book and will recommend it to my friends when I go back to school.

Front desk by Kelly yang was a inspirational read that opened my eyes to the life of struggling immigrants that always find a way to show perseverance and help others

My favorite character was her best friend even though I have forgoten their name I didn't really like the book because it was kind of sad and I wouldn't recommmend it.

Heartwarming

I enjoyed reading this book lots. My favourite character was Mia Tang who enjoyed writing letters to other people. Even though she was quite unlucky throughout the book, she was always hopeful. I would recommend this book to people who like to read adventure books.

I really enjoyed this book. It handled contemporary issues well and made me think about the treatment of ethnic minorities.

Loved the positive female lead character who teaches you to aim for the stars. Was a totally different setting to other children’s books I’ve read and a great book for exploring discrimination.

Both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time, Mia's story (and that of other characters in the book) is the story of many immigrants in real life. It brings to the fore the greed, exploitation, racism and attitudes of those who have money or those who have risen in some way from where they were before, forgetting their own roots and experiences. But there is also so much hope. Mia is such a positive character, headstrong (even when feeling unconfident), resilient (even when she is at her lowest ebb), caring, empathetic and so much more. There are so many layers and discussions/talking points to be had from this book.
I will be definitely be recommending this title to children and colleagues on our return to school in Sept. Now on to the next in the series...

Amazing, Just AMAZING! I love the character Mia the book's protagonist. She is happy, cheerful and NEVER gives up. I LOVE HER. I love the storyline and everything about it.

It is a very well themed fiction book and I liked the character Mia the best.
I think people who like mystery and adventure books would like to read this book a lot.
It is a very fun book to read and is very enjoyable book.

I really enjoyed reading this book! It was gripping and it made me really imagine the immigrants, weeklies and Mia's lives. I couldn't put it down!

Ok and good for multicultural. The reader feels great empathy for the main character. However, very American, which may put off some readers???

This was an outstanding fictional book based on real life by one of my favourite authors, Kelly Yang - a Chinese-American growing up in America. This book was centered around Mia, our feisty female protagonist who helped her parents around their motel. THis book was so inspirational in so many ways and I found it really highlighted the struggles of new immigrants, and generally immigrants, in the United States.

Mia was definitely my favourite character, she was determined, kind and caring with a love for the English language - just like me! Seeing the struggles of her family through Mia's eyes - that was amazing. We were so similar, yet so different. Mia's life was different to my incredibly privileged one even though we were the same age. In some parts the book was predictable, and in others I suspected that one thing was going to happen and then another did.

As for the other characters, my favourite secondary character was Jason - the son of Mia's employer, Mr. Yao. I fin it astounding that despite both of them being Chinese-American that they live such different lives. Simply based on the fact that Jason was born in the US and Mia was not. At first Jason simply comes off as a horrible, jealous bully but however, as the book goes on we find that he has a lot more depth than that. And just as interesting a story to tell of his own. Talking about them being Chinese, I adored the little tit-bits of information about Chinese immigrants sprinkled throughout the whole story too.

And upon reading the last couple pages about Kelly Yang's OWN experience growing up and managing motels in America as a child - I realised that this was not fiction for some people. This - was real life. I love how the book informs and illustrates the hidden story of all these people and I hope that by spreading this story, more people will realise exactly why people come seeking "The American Dream". I would recommend it to kids and adults, though despite some mature topics, refrain from giving it to someone younger than nine years old. A very important story that I honestly think deserves to be in every single library.

This is a great book. It teaches you that it's not OK to treat people unfairly because of the colour of their skin. I would recommend it to people who like books that are based on real life.

I love all the different stories that the immigrants live to tell, how she improves her writing and how she always tries to improve things for people like her blue hat

The Front Desk is an fictional story full of heart.
My favourite character is Mia who, although she's from China and has only been living in the USA for two years, wants to become a writer. Mia embarks on an heartwarming adventure to try to save her family from becoming homeless and poorer then they were already.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a heartwarming adventure written down on paper.

I would recommend it because it teaches you about how challenging being an immigrant is. It explores a world not many people have been through. It educates children who are not familiar with being an immigrant while being fun and intriguing. It shows you that if you believe than you can achieve.

This book was absolutely AMAZING!! I loved it it was so detailed and the how they all came together to raise money to buy the calivista was heartwarming

My favourite character would either be Mia because she is able to manage all the problems she has during the story, she is very brave and kind.
