The book is one you should definitely read
age 11+
A book filled with the past, black people being treated differently because of their skin colour. I would recommend to people who do not know about slavery.
It was really interesting learning about different cultures
I like the book because of how it is written.
i love how it tells us all about are past
Very interesting.
A brilliant book! Should be compulsory reading for everyone in Britain. Clearly explained and easy to read.
A brilliant collection of factual stories that aim to broaden children's understanding of key moments in history that arise in the national curriculum.
I loved learning about longstanding influence of BIPOC (black, indigenous and people of colour) in Britain.
Very interesting learning about the history of black people.
I think this book is good for learning black and british history.
I would rate it a 5 because it teaches young people black history and i think it good to learn about black history and its diffrent than what we learn in school.
I'll be honest it was boring but it was informative and it was a bit tragic with a hint of melancholy
I wouldn't recommend this book to people who are sensitive or to people who prefer fiction.
It was a very interesting book about how hard it was to be not white in the last century.
A really interesting read, with a number of facts and historical events I wasn't previously aware of. It's difficult to say how well a young reader would be able to follow some sections, as they may require an understanding of the wider political and historical context. Probably better to treat the book as a resource to dip into, rather than read through. The paperback version was rather cheaply produced, which was a shame, as some of the fascinating images and diagrams were difficult to see clearly.
I think I would recommend reading the adult version first for teachers, before deciding whether to buy this format for the classroom.
Every child should read this book - and every teacher too! A very simple look at the history of black people in Britain. I thought I had a good knowledge of this but some of the facts surprised me. Written without bias or emotion, this books gives facts in a child-friendly way presenting some of the most shocking examples of British thinking in a way that makes you really stop and reconsider your knowledge and viewpoint on the subject.
very good and really descriptive
This was a very fact based book - I learnt a few things
An incredibly thought provoking book which taught me a great deal about Black British history. I was genuinely horrified to read about the attitudes of the British government at various times. An absolute must read.
