It’s Leo’s job as the Guardian’s apprentice to protect the village from the monsters that lurk in the surrounding forest. Whenever a monster gets too close to the village walls Leo must venture out, using his magical map to first find the monster and then do battle with it.
In this book, Leo must track down a deadly Spitfang Lizard before it reaches the village. He is given one piece of advice-first they spit, then they bite. If a Spitfang’s throat swells up . . . run!

This was a bit too boring for Ollie but he loves dragons!
Perfect for readers moving into chapter books, although would interest older readers, this adventure story involves Leo Wilder, apprentice to the Guardian. He learns skills to protect his village from the monsters and has to make sure that they don't even know they exist. The latest threat comes from he Spitfang Monster, a cross between a snake and crocodile, with a horrific spit and a bite that is truly deadly. I enjoyed the amazing illustrations throughout the story, evoking the tension and challenges that Leo faces. The characters are well developed and Starla, a helpful leatherwing is a great support to Leo as he uses his magical map to save the village.
