A baby girl was found by Charles Maxim, who saved her at sea. There was a ship that sank, and Charles found a baby and rescued her. He named her Sophie and kept her being her guardian. A welfare agent called Miss Eliot has been telling Charles that he was not looking after her as he should have been. Sophie was eager to find her mum. Since the shipwreck, she has lost her mum and now has to find her. Charles and Sophie moved to France to prevent Sophie from being taken to an orphanage. Since they moved, Sophie felt familiar with this place. She visited a shop where they sell cellos -- Sophie had a memory of her mum playing the cello. She and Charles tried to go to the police to see if they had any folders of the musicians from the ship. Nothing worked, but Sophie didn't stop trying to find her mother. Every night, Sophie went up onto the roof. Once she saw a boy jumping from roof to roof, and met him the next day. His name was Matteo. Each day she learnt something new about him. She saved some food every dinner time for him to eat. Once she told him about her missing mother, he said he could help. She told him everything she knew about her -- even her name, Vivienne Vert. Matteo got some friends to help with this mission. Sophie found out that their names were Anastasia, Safi and Gerard. In the night, they all gathered at the police station. They hung down the roof till they saw the folder room. Sophie and Matteo looked in each folder until they found the right one. But it was a man. There weren't any women musicians. Suddenly Sophie recognised some parts: they looked a bit like her, and the clothes were different. Underneath the picture, it said that they survived. Out of nowhere, Sophie heard music. She ran out of the building and followed the sound of music. Right in front of her, she saw her mother! This was all Sophie dreamed of.
I absolutely loved the 1st half of this book. The 2nd half is good too, but it’s definitely a book of 2 halves.
The descriptions are v funny.
It was a great book but I felt it needed to speed up a bit
A thoroughly enjoyable read! I loved the relationship between Sophie and Charles, their trust in each other and their uncomplicated way of living together in a house (I thought back at Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking and her horse in the farmhouse). And then Sophie and Charles embark on this huge adventure to try and find Sophie's mother...what a beautifully told story! The vocabulary in this book is accessible and I think children y4 upwards would enjoy this.
This was a very good book
This book was a fiction book and it’s comes with lots of gross pets but they are a bit funny. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as it kept you entertained. I would certainly recommend it for someone else to read it.
It’s a really good book
It’s really thrilling and good. I couldn’t put the book down. Not much books impress me, so when I say that this book is good, then it’s good.
Love the book but for me the ending was confusing and I couldn't understand it .
My favroite part was when they relised the blackmailing.
I thought it was marvellous I loved all the twists turns and adventure the best thing was when they went to the music shop . My favourite person was Matteo . A true great tale
It’s about this girl, called Sophie. She was on the Queen Mary as a baby, and when the boat was sinking she was rescued by someone called Charles. They had a life together and he was like a father, but Sophie still hoped her mum was alive. This lady didn’t want that to happen, and didn’t think she was living a good life, so she questioned them about some stuff, but they didn’t pass the “test” - Sophie got her cello and they went to France. The story ahead is a story about a brave little girl.
A lovely and original story of a young girl in search of her mother. The characters are great and very likeable. A great book for upper ks2.
It was great
A brilliant read. The story was very visual in the way Katherine Rundell described the characters, their expressions and events taking place. I lose interest in things quite quickly and was a reluctant reader myself at school, but this book gripped my interest throughout and I wanted to know how the story was going to end. Looking forward to reading more titles by this author.
Violets are blue
Roses are red
Charles is incompetent
Vivianne should be dead
this book was fiction and my favourite character was Sophie because she tried hard and she never ignored a possible. this book was quite factual and it interested me to know how people live on the rooftops of Paris. I would recommend this to someone who enjoys adventure and fun!
This book was amazing! I really enjoy Katherine Rundell's style of writing! I loved it when Charles surprised the rooftoppers by sitting there next to them! This is a great book! I would read it again and again!
I loved chapter 3!
I really enjoyed this book. It was recommended by a teacher at school. My favourite character is Sophie as she shows resilience and determination throughout. I enjoy reading books that are for children and young people, as I can then recommend them to the class I work with.
Good plot twist. Nice descriptions. Great story.
Awesome book!
Strange ending. I felt like the story was just about to begin and wanted to find out more. I wonder if there will be a sequel.
Really good
I really enjoyed reading rooftoppers because it was exciting and it made sense. Matteo was my favourite character because he really showed his survival skills.I also liked how he jumped from one rooftop to another and that he was always very calm. It wasn't that factual and it was fiction but I definitely recommend it to other people
I loved this book. A young, inquisitive child tries to find her long-lost mother based on a cello cases and her thoughts. Using her memories, she searches for her in a unique form, by roofs. With Charles, her foster father, and her new friends, she goes through a long, troublesome journey above Paris.
Really good. It is a good thing to read as it teaches you to stay brave.
A beautifully written imaginative story set in the early 1900’s in both London and Paris.
The story begins in London after the sinking of a passenger ship in the English channel and follows the early years of orphan Sophie from her 1st to her 12th birthday with her loving, bookish gaurdian Charles. After rescuing baby Sophie from the wreck, Charles has raised Sophie in a somewhat unconventional manner but has saturated her life with love, acceptance and possibilities. As she turns 12 though Sophie’s life is set to change radically as she is informed that Charles is no longer deemed to be an appropriate guardian for her and she must go to live in an orphanage.
At this point the setting changes to Paris as Charles and Sophie run away from the authorities in search of Sophie’s biological mother, whom Sophie is convinced is still very much alive. The author writes in such a way that the Parisian rooftop setting feels so real as Sophie and her new friends dangerously move among the rooftops of the city.
A beautiful book and a must read for upper KS2 and beyond.
This book was really good it included lots of exciting adventures and nail biting moments. My favourite characters were Charles and Vivienne even though Vivienne only appeared until the end it felt like I knew her the whole time. I would recommend this book to any adventurous readers.
For some reason, this book made me cry. They way Sophie would do anything to find her mother even if she doesnt know her well is proof that nothing beats family. The connection Sophie and Matteo have made in such a short period of time shows the power of love and friendship. I love you Katherine Rundell
I absolutely loved this book! I loved how even the quiet tree-dweller Safi isn't a main character, she becomes a brave fighter when it matters most. I love the motto that Sofie and Charles have which is never ignore a possible as it is something we should all live by to stay optimistic when times are tough. i would totally recommend this book to anyone especially someone who loves adventure and just an all-round good read. Brilliant!
