A KIND OF SPARK tells the story of 11-year-old Addie as she campaigns for a memorial in memory of the witch trials that took place in her Scottish hometown. Addie knows there’s more to the story of these ‘witches’, just like there is more to hers. Can Addie challenge how the people in her town see her, and her autism, and make her voice heard?
A story about friendship, courage and self-belief, perfect for fans of The Goldfish Boy.

This book is all about being different. Addie is a autistic girl who has a really mean teacher called Miss Murphy. When she finds out about the unfair witch trials which had happened in her town, she wants to build a memorial for them. Unfortunately people in her town don't listen to her as she is autistic.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in neurodiversity or readers that love the genre of adventure. I really enjoyed the story’s twists and turns that made me want to read more.
This book created a new found awareness of neurodiversity as I didn’t know much about it before I read this book. I now understand and appreciate the importance of this subject. Now I would like to see more neurodiverse characters used in literature.
Elle Mcnicoll is an intelligent writer who has shown the importance of neurodiversity. She is a determined and passionate advocate for children with autism and many others. She has created an outstanding story.
This has a powerful message that is: nothing and no one can stop you from doing what you love.
Great book! Loved that it was from the point of view from someone who is neurodivergent. They share the daily difficulties they face but accomplish something great at the end
Everyone should read this
I really liked the main character Addie. I could really relate to Addie because she is kind and I could imagine being her friend in real life. I like that the main character is autistic as that does not happen in books enough.
It really shows you about life from the perspective of aa neurodiverse person, and I found it very informative, as well as entertaining! My favourite people are Keedie, because she always puts on a brave face and helps her little sister, and Audrey who always sticks up for Addie, no matter what. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in autism, campaining or witches.
I found this book interesting and inspirational.
I thought that this book was amazing hence the rating 5/5. I would definitely give it a better rating if I could! I love that this book tells us more about autism and how it affects people. I really loved the bond between Addie and Keedie and especially Nina at the end. I would definitely recommend as this is one of my favourite books! Elle McNicoll is a great author!
Loved this! A powerful book to show the superpower of Autism and to celebrate diversity! Loved Addie and the other characters too!
Incredible book giving in insight into the world of someone with ALN. I've recommended it to every parent I know!
I really loved this book! It's told from the perspective of an autistic girl who after learning about witches at school campaigns for a memorial to remember those wrongly killed. It tells the story of the witches so well alongside Addie's own personal story. You feel like you know the characters right from the start and the historical aspect adds another layer to the story. I would highly recommend this book.
My favourite character is Audrey, the best friend to the main character. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes looking through someone else's point of view. It truly is an amazing book.
Fantastic insight to autism and how it can affect children and how they often get treated. Sad but lovely story!
A great middle grade book about a young autistic girl and her family. It follows her crusade for her council to put up a memorial for women who were accused of witchcraft and killed in her village on the outskirts of Edinburgh. She suffers at the hands of a school bully and draws parallels between what happened in the past with the treatment of autistic and neurodiverse people now. There are lots of insights into autism and ways it can affect how people interact with the world and those around them.
my favourite character was a girl called Audrey because she is a very nice and supportive friend. I also think that this story is very touching and funny at the same time because it is very sad when people bully other people but funny when adults keep refusing a very good idea.
Amazing book
100% recommended this to others
A Kind Of Spark is about an 11 year old girl named Addie who is autistic. She has a strong and un-breakable bond with her older sister, Keedie, who is also autistic. Addie struggles at school because of her autism as she is different and gets bullied because of it. This is a beautiful story about being different and an important book for children to read to learn a bit more about neurodivergent people. Highly recommend it.
really really interesting
This is a great book about an autistic girl called Addie. I also watched the TV series it was so good! Amazing.
I really enjoyed reading this book from the point of view of Addie, an eleven year old autistic girl. The comparison between witches killed in her village and the way in which people with neurodiversity are treated was thought-provoking. I would recommend it to children in Year 5 and above.
Great book, dealing with lots of themes and I love the way history and nature (sharks) was thread through the narrative. Really enjoyed reading it with my child.
It talked a lot about different people having rights to do the same as normal people!
I liked the sad part about it
Great read for raising awareness of being autistic from an 11 year old girl's perspective. Should be read by anyone working with children. Saddens me slightly that the teacher is portrayed as a bullying adult with no awareness of autism as in my experience this certainly isn't the case but I do realise that this is done as part of the story. I would also recommend this book for children from the age of 10 or 11 as it would give them insight into the world of autistic students among them.
A beautiful book that all teachers and children should read!
simply the best
This is one of my favourite books. It is deeply compelling and had me completely bewitched. If you haven't read this you must. It helped me understand more about people like Addie and Keedie. I love Elle Mcnicoll books now.
In this book, Addie and her sister have to find ways to adapt in the world around them as they struggle at points to cope with their autism. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure stories.
Addie is autistic.
Such a beautiful book!
