The funny and joyful picture book from the number one bestselling author and illustrator of The Gruffalo, Stick Man and Zog.
’Morning had dawned on the African plain.
The lion lay grooming his glorious mane.
The kudu looked cool and the rhino looked fine.
The bright pink flamingos looked simply divine.
The zebra looked graceful; the leopard look great.
Oh what a picture of beauty – but wait!’

Another good book - great book of explaining people/animals beauty is within and not to judge from the first impressions.
I likes when the little ones said they were lovely and kind
This is a wonderful story, following the hardships of the most ‘ugly’ animals in South Africa. The twist at the end is truly heartwarming and encourages us all to look for the beauty and love in everything. The songs are written in true Donaldson style and the rhyming is unashamedly brilliant as usual. This would make a great KS1 or even lower KS2 book linked to habitats or animal topics or even geography based looking at continents.
I loved the rhyming words, the rhythm of the book and the message at the end. It reminded me of my mummy and that I love her no matter how she looks. The babies all loved their parents and they didn't care that everyone else thought they were ugly because they were kind inside which is all that matters.
My favourite character is the hyena because I like the spots on the animal
