This was a fantastic book. It grew and grew on me and I became heavily invested in the characters. The writing is excellent- it's an informative novel, a very good introduction for young adults into the Troubles with a beautiful coming of age story that will be relatable to many. Through Fergus' eyes we see the effect of living in Drumleash at this time on his family, the town itself and others that come to visit or are drafted in to work there. Fergus was my favourite character - he embodied hope, determination and commitment and it us through him that the other characters are brought to life. The connection to events even further back in history are cleverly woven in adding more depth to the book. Through Fergus' running hobby, the author brings the setting to life - I was fascinated by the descriptions. Finally there are many interesting relationships and family dynamics in this book with my favourite being that of Fergus and Owain.
