This was one of my favourite books. It had very touching and poignant parts in it and it was uplifting at the end.
Alfie Monk is 1000 years old and is living with his mother. That is, until she gets killed in a fire that also took most of his house and his cat away from him. When he sees the two, Roxy Minto and Aidan Linklater, turn up at his house, mere hours before the fire, he knows that he will need help to restore his age and continue ageing with his friends.
The funny book of a good storywriter, this is the ultimate read to someone very bookwormy and brainy. This book is recommended to all those who love books. The character I liked the most was Alfie and Aidan, although I also enjoyed Roxy.
I found this book really entertaining and I found myself endlessly reading. This book is about a boy who is 1,000 years old and can remember the last Viking invasion of England. I could imagine the point of view that the boy was in and how sad he was at the start when he watched his village burn and people being killed by the fire. He was fortunate to escape with his mum, cat and also found a cave to stay in. In the same cave, he had made a mistake, one that he said that he would regret forever. His dad had some life-pearls which people would kill to get and the boy's dad had unfortunately died trying to keep them. Alfie and his mum were left with 3 life-pearls. Alfie used one for his cuts, then accidentally stepped on once, wasting it. Just after his mum came and he was overwhelmed with shame as he had disobeyed his mother. I would recommend this book to family and friends because it is a great source of entertainment and removes boredom.
Exciting book but not enough action. The villain should have lasted longer.
The historical facts interwoven with the fictional stories made this a really interesting read. I think this could appeal to history lovers who want to have a go at reading a fictional story.
I enjoyed this book - it wouldn't usually be one I would choose, but I thought it was funny and appealing. I would recommend it to others, particularly more reluctant readers.
I enjoyed it a lot but sometimes it would go a bit down hill after a few chapters but overall pretty good.
My favourite character was Biffa the cat and I love how for separate people he changed the font of the writing .
This is the best book I have ever read! My favourite character is Roxy because of her great acting skills and ability to think fast.
It interested me because there were a lot of things that remained unknown until something big happened. This would be perfect for fantasy and adventure seekers.
This is a really long book which may put some children off but well worth it. Great story about an 11 year old boy and his challenges with not being able to grow old. Well written page turner which really makes you think positively about living a normal life, having friends and family and having the luxury of passing milestones and growing older. Recommend for years 5 and 6 and beyond.
It interested me because i have seen all of my friends saying how good the book is and how good of the adventure on the book and all of the drama .
It was a very exciting story with unexpected twists and turns. It is very good as it is about an immortal person who wants to become mortal again and has to go on a massive adventure to do so.
Definitely a 10/10
In this book, Alfie learns that being ageless (not immortal) isn't everything he thought it would be. He goes on a epic adventure with his 2 new friends from the 21st century to try and restart the aging process. I recommend this book to people who like adventure fiction books.
Loved it
Very short chapters which makes it easy to ready
Highly recommended
This is a heart-stopping and epic adventure book. Ross Welford is so talented at writing books that are daring, moving and literally just amazing. This story is about Alfred Monk (who is 1,000 years old)'s quest and journey to find the last life pearl, in order to perceive his dream of growing up like all the normal kids around him. After his poor mother's death from the fire, Alfred made sincere friends whom he could actually trust and accept support from, he found the pearl and reached his dream with their help. This book also has some historical knowledge in it, which makes it even better. I would recommend it to anyone aged 9-13 who loves books about friendship, family-ship, trust, history, and fantasy.
I liked this book because it was a bit science fiction and was exciting.
I found the book depressing as it was about a man on a suicide mission. It was a fictional story and I liked the dog the best. I liked the use of language and thought it was a well written book, just didn't like the subject.
Exceptional! I was mesmerised by the storyline and how the author wrote from different character perspectives.
It was a really interesting fast paced book. It also gave an insight of a little bit of history.
My favourite character, Alfie, is a 12 year old boy that has been alive for 1,000 years. I like this story because Alfie just wants to be like a normal teenage boy, grow up like his friends and live a normal life. I would recommend his book because of its exciting story line.
I love it because it is very adventurous.
I did enjoy the book only I got a bit confused with all the characters as they had Alfie and Aidan . By t I would recommend it as I don’t think I really gave the book a chance.
I thought of this book was that it is kind of mysterious.
It is fiction.
My favourite character was Alfie (the 1,000 year old boy).
It interested me because the boy (Alfie) has a life Pearl and turned it eternal ( well his actual age)was recently found out in the book, his age is 4320!)
A man wanted the Pearl was broke it and now Alfie lives a normal life.
I would certainly recommend it.
I loved this book! There were so many plot twists and turns that it kept me hooked the whole way through! I think that there are definitely pros and cons of living forever, for me the cons outweigh the pros. I wouldn’t want to, because I don’t feel like I would value the days I have on our beautiful planet Earth. It doesn’t feel natural or right to live forever, especially if you have to hide away like Alfie.
I recommend this book to anyone 9+ who likes friendship and adventure! Ross Welford is a truly, truly, remarkable author! I’m in love! So far I’ve read 4 of his books and I hope to read them all! I really recommend this book! It’s so good!
I liked this book. I think the plot is very imaginative and is very original.
On the search for a book to accompany our Vikings topic, this was a lovely story about a boy named Alfie who has lived 1000 years since the Viking ages! A wonderful story about friendship, family, loyalty, loss and forgiveness. Not a book I will teach for the topic as not many historical links, but one that I will encourage my class to read alongside during our topic!
Adventours book
It is very epic but saaaaad. my favourite character is Aidan and Jack Mcgonagal as they have a good story line.
it really makes you feel like your in the moment and its sad but funny and a smudge of fun history ages 7-14
Alfie has been 11 years old since the Viking invasions after having taken a ‘life-pearl’ which prevents ageing. He has had a wide range of experiences over the centuries and is vastly knowledgeable, but he is tired of his forever childhood. Alfie, and his similarly non-aging mother and cat, have largely managed to hide themselves away – until tragedy strikes. Meanwhile, Aidan’s family have moved house because of financial difficulties; Aidan isn’t happy about it, but then he meets Roxy who is suspicious about the strange boy and his mother in the woods. This story is told from the alternating perspectives of Alfie and Aidan; it is a heart-warming, fast-paced adventure with a fascinating intermingling of history and modern life. It is rare for me to re-read a book and even more unusual for me to invest 8 hours into listening to a novel for the second time (there are too many other things I want to read or listen to)! But once I started again with this Ross Welford book, I couldn’t stop. And once again, I laughed and cried.
It was very strange but I loved it.
A fantastic adventure story which is written well. Chapters alternate between being told by two of the protagonists. I would highly recommend this book - a very enjoyable read.
