Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed.

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl’s struggle for justice.

An incredible read with some hard hitting quotes and moments. A book of fiction that is sadly far too real. A must read and a great starting point for understanding the difficulties the minority face on a day to day basis. Outstanding!

A brilliantly written book – Very descriptive, you felt you were actually with the characters throughout the story. I would recommend!

"What's the point in having a voice if you're gonna be silent?"

This book is about a girl called Starr Amara Carter who witnesses the shooting of her best friend Khalil. After the accident, Starr has a choice - to hide the fact that she's witness or speak out about it. She decides to hide for a bit, until her friend Kenya reminds that Khalil would've spoken out if it was her. She eventually goes to the grand jury, who doesn't decide to arrest the officer who killed Khalil.

My favourite character is Starr as she was really brave to speak about racial injustice. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of history, drama and activism.
