THE EPIC NEW THRILLER BEGINS.
The creator of the number one bestselling SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT series returns with the story of a girl on the run from everything she loves… and the monsters that await her. For anyone who ever thought their parents were monsters… Amber Lamont is a normal sixteen-year-old. Smart but insecure, she spends most of her time online, where she can avoid her beautiful, aloof parents and their weird friends. But when a shocking encounter reveals a horrifying secret, Amber is forced to go on the run. Killer cars, vampires, undead serial killers and red-skinned, horned demons – Amber hurtles from one threat to the next, revealing the terror woven into the very fabric of her life. As her parents close in behind her, Amber’s only chance rests with her fellow travellers, who are not at all what they appear to be… Witty, action-packed and heart-stoppingly thrilling, Demon Road will take you on an epic road-trip across the supernatural landscape of America. A horror/fantasy novel that children who like books such as Harry Potter or Lord of the rings might like. From the Derek Landy, the author of Skulduggery Pleasant and is certainly a bit darker and more horror based than his other work, but I quite liked that about it. It wasn't especially graphic or disturbing with chapters that offered light relief and comedy.
Whilst the main character is female I think this book is suitable for any readers around the 12-16 range. Amber, the main character has always felt that her parents were very distant with her and it's only when she nears 16 and shows signs of having powers that they have an interest in her. On her sixteenth birthday she discovers that her parents and close friends are demons who have lived for hundreds of years and want to eat her. She escapes from them and the story takes us through her journey of escape and survival around America. She makes two friends / acquaintances on her journey and Milo and Glen who provide opportunity for laughs and Amber's character development including mastering her demonic powers.
It wasn't a book that took me through a wide range of emotions but was fast paced, action packed and an easy read. There were funny moment and some mildly scary ones. I liked Amber as the main character, her attitude and behaviour felt believable and relatable. As the story progresses she shows clear signs of development from her beginning as an insecure young girl, trying to come to terms with her demon side.
A brilliant story with mystery and monsters. It is quite good for older readers as it can be slightly violent but it can be hilarious and heartwarming as well. The story is a pleasant mix of horror and adventure. This story is in three parts and this is the first; the other two are named ‘desolation’(the second book) and ‘American monsters’(the third book)
A great story and another instant classic from Derek Landy (the author of skulduggery pleasant)
Thanks for reading
I have always loved Derek Landy's books (Skulduggery Pleasant series, etc). So I had to read this, the first book in the new Demon Road trilogy.
The story takes place in present day USA. The main character is Amber. Who, on the face of it, seems like a normal, if rather shy teenager. There is plenty of humour, but also plenty of gore too. It is written, as if it were an American novel, and American spellings of words, and phrases.
The main two characters are likeable, and the action is fast paced and graphic, as we have come to expect from Derek Landy. I loved this book. The next book is out in April 2016. I cannot wait!
