Patti Smith M Train
This is a beautiful book soaked in contradictions and coffee.
Lots and lots of coffee.
We read this as a title for a music based reading group called Litpop. A number of the group were unwilling as the initial newspaper reviews showed it to be a meandering journey without a specific purpose. After reading it we all loved the book and those not familiar with her music or the very splendid “just kids” went off to find out more about her.
And the contradictions ?
A book about a musician who barely mentions music and seems to listen to none. A person known all over the world who lives alone but seems to exist for long periods in isolation. A person who reveres and honours everything but loses much. New York streets are strewn with things that Patti leaves behind or puts in her coatpockets that are unsewn this only ends when she finally looses the coat !
A lovely book that we all fully recommend.
