With a beautiful cover illustration by Alex T. Smith, creator of the Claude series, The Great Ghost Rescue is a wonderfully spooky young fiction title from the award-winning author of Journey to the River Sea, Eva Ibbotson.

‘Nobody knew what had gone wrong with Humphrey. Perhaps it was his ectoplasm . . .’

Humphrey the Horrible sounds scary, but he’s actually a very friendly skeleton, with twinkling eye sockets and jangling finger bones. Humphrey dreams of being ghastly, like his brother – a screaming skull – or terrifying, like his bloodsucking vampire-bat cousins. But when Humphrey discovers an evil plot to exorcise his family, he finally realizes you don’t have to be spine-chillingly fearsome to be a hero.

I've only recently been introduced to Eva Ibbotson as a children's author but enjoyed this short ghostly book. It would make a nice Halloween class novel. The main characters are quite horrible looking but nice inside and seeing past this is a nice message. As well as the idea of sanctuary and looking after each other and places, people and animals who need help.

‘The Great Ghost Rescue’, which is not particularly scary, is an addictive adventure story. This book is about Humphrey The Horrible, he added the horrible because he thought it would help him become horrible which at present he was not. On there journey to help and safety they meet many other ghosts and animals. I would recommend this book to others who are okay with shocking things that people can do.

I love how the Author describes Humphrey and how (even though he's not horrible) he ends up saving his family and all the other ghosts.
