From the beloved children’s author of Hetty Feather, Tracy Beaker and Rose Rivers.
Opal Plumstead might be plain, but she has always been fiercely intelligent.
Yet her scholarship and dreams of university are snatched away when her father is sent to prison, and fourteen-year-old Opal must start work at the Fairy Glen sweet factory to support her family.
She struggles to get along with her other workers, who think she’s snobby and stuck up.
But Opal idolises Mrs Roberts, the factory’s beautiful, dignified owner. The best thing about Mrs Roberts?
She’s a suffragette!
Opal’s world is opened to Mrs Pankhurst, and the fight to give women the right to vote.
And when Opal meets Morgan, Mrs Roberts’ handsome son , and heir to Fairy Glen- she believes she’s found her soulmate.
But the First World War is about to begin, and will change Opal’s life for ever.
A brilliantly gripping wartime story from the bestselling, award-winning Jacqueline Wilson.

Amazing and beautiful! Another passionate story from Jacqueline Wilson!
Absolutely brilliant.
She works hard and finally achieves her dreams of art.
I think this book is very exellent and really emotional and very sad... I am shocked because most of the books that I haveb read all have a happy ending but this one does not which makes this one unique
I think it was a really good book but it was a bit old for some people in my school. I liked how they included votes for women and beautiful paintings. It was very long and detailed (which I liked). One of my favourite authors is Jaqueline Wilson.
Live with Opal. Gasp as she is destined for a life at Fairy Glen! Read on in awe as her father makes a life-changing decision! Repulse at Cassie's new love and...
Be ready to have your hearts melted by Morgan!
brilliant but very sad
I love JWs books. So of corse I would like it. Talk about plot twists tho! Would recomend
Opal is interesting and kind because she helps her friends at school, even the ones that aren’t kind to her.
Each chapter they talk about haunted places and ghosts. We also find out that Opal’s dad is an author.
It’s a must read.
It's such a good book! I recommend it
good
so much family drama, it nearly made me cry!
This book is one of my all-time favourites as it gives an insight into the suffragettes and the huge political difference they made to the current world today. Young Opal Plumstead aspires to become a suffragette and wants to be like her boss, Mrs Roberts. Soon, Mrs Robert's Son, Morgan, as they both becomes friends. Morgan had become more to young Opal and the first world war loomed and Morgan become a soldier. He then tragically died. I would recommend this to anyone who loves history but besides anyone who loves reading.
Gouda like cheese. 5 stars
I really liked this book because it was very interesting and I was always wondering what would happen next.
When her life is turned is turned upside down, she must begin day 1. At the factory where many think of her as arrogant and snobby. But not Mrs Roberts the one she idolises deeply.Mrs Roberts introduces her to a friend and Opal becomes a suffragette the one and only Emily pankhurst is leading it. This was a fantastic read. I would highly recommend this inspiring, heart warming story
It’s full of love, heartbreak, happiness, tears and that’s why I love it
When she has to work at the fairy glen factory life is a misery.
Her father is in jail.
Her sister ran away
And because of ww1, her soulmate is dead!
I really liked the characters and the descriptions. It had a really good plot full of happy and sad bits.
It is a nice book and is really emotional and is a good read
I really like it but it is a bit sad at the end and I think that all stories should have mostly happy endings.I like Opal best and I can see why she feels like she does and acts like she does. It feels so much like a real event that I can see myself in the situation. I would recommend it to 9 or 10 and over.
I loved this book i hated when it told you that Morgan died I felt bad for Mrs Roberts because Morgan was her last living relative I think that although it stop the story Sam and Opal will get along really well
I enjoued this book set in the olden days
Very good
My favourite character was Opal
I really enjoyed this book
I thought it was a bit sudden when her father went into prison for stealing since he seemed a humble character
My favourite characters are, Opal, the main character and the factory owner, Mrs Roberts because they both looked out for each other.
I would definitely recommend it to someone else because I enjoyed it thoroughly 😊
I thought it was very good.
The most interesting character is Mrs Roberts, the factory owner, because sometimes she cares for Opal but other times she doesn’t like Opal.
It is fictional book and my favourite character was Cassie.
It is a good read if you like Hetty Feather and is quite enjoyable
This is a good book but it has a sad ending.
My favourite character is Cassandra because she is very funny.
