Slow Horses, as a novel in the spy genre, manages to successfully keep the traditional spy aesthetic, whilst bringing it into the modern era. The concept of a “Slough House” kind of place for unwanted spies seemed like a new idea which immediately peaked my interest and the slew of well-rounded down and out characters worked well to create an environment full of intrigue, mistrust and betrayal. The writing is witty and fast paced. As someone who rarely chooses to read spy novels, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself so gripped with the twisty plot and ever-increasing pace that I continuing reading (one handed) as I went about my day.
