For Adults
Small Pleasures by Clare Chambers was a breakthrough word-of-mouth hit of 2020. It featured on BBC 2’s Between the Covers, and has recently been longlisted for the 2021 Women’s Prize for Fiction.
Orion is delighted to offer 5 groups 10 copies of the book in exchange for online reviews. They would also like group members to share a photo of themselves reading the book whilst indulging in their own ‘small pleasure’, whether that’s going on a daily walk or curling up with a cup of tea.
About the book
1957, south-east suburbs of London. Jean Swinney is a feature writer on a local paper, disappointed in love and on the brink of forty. When a young woman called Gretchen Tilbury contacts the paper to claim that her daughter is the result of a virgin birth, it is down to Jean to discover whether she is a miracle or a fraud. But the more she investigates, the more her life becomes strangely (and not unpleasantly) intertwined with that of the Tilburys: Gretchen herself, her husband Howard – with his dry wit and gentle disposition – and her charming daughter Margaret.

To pitch for your group to take part in this offer, please log into Reading Groups for Everyone and complete the survey linked below by Tuesday 13 April 2021. Successful groups will be sent their books shortly after, and are asked to share their pictures and online reviews by early June.
