The Booker Prizes Monthly Spotlight - August 2025

The Booker Prizes celebrates the world’s most outstanding fiction, whether written in or translated into English, and each month they shine a spotlight on a different book from the Booker Library.

This month, they are celebrating Douglas Stuart’s Shuggie Bain with an in-depth and wide-ranging interview with Douglas Stuart, a reading guide, an extract, as well as a chance to win a copy of the book. Access the Booker Monthly Spotlight today.

We will be sharing the Booker Prizes Monthly Spotlight for you to enjoy each month.

Introducing the Booker Prizes July Monthly Spotlight: Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart

Drawing on author Douglas Stuart’s own experiences growing up in 1980s Glasgow, Shuggie Bain follows the titular character as he tries to survive within a family that is falling apart. Abandoned by his father and siblings, Shuggie is left to care for his alcoholic mother while struggling to come to terms with his own identity.

The debut novel was famously rejected by 40 publishers before it found its way into print and went on to win the Booker Prize in 2020.

Five years on, our Monthly Spotlight for August includes an in-depth and wide-ranging interview with Douglas Stuart, a reading guide and an extract from Shuggie Bain, as well as a chance to win a copy of the book.
