This was an absolute joy to read. Not so much crime fiction as fiction with crimes in it. It’s the first of Kate Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie series, and was published in 2004. (There are six books in the series now.) Brodie is a former soldier and police sergeant, now a private investigator in Cambridge, and the novel tells of three slightly interconnected crimes he is investigating – all of them interesting cases. Brodie gets to the bottom of two of them, but the reader is allowed to know what happened in all three. Kate Atkinson has a way of drawing deep into her characters, so the reader gets to know Brodie and his clients well. I thought this was brilliantly well written and I enjoyed it so much I'm now looking for more in the series. I rarely give 5-Stars to a book but this is one of them.
