Bradley Chalker is the oldest child in the class. He tells enormous lies and the teachers say he has serious behaviour problems. No one likes him – except Carla, the school counsellor. She thinks Bradley is sensitive and generous, and she even enjoys his far-fetched stories. Carla knows that Bradley could change, if only he weren’t afraid to try.

Louis Sachar’s writing is engaging and entertaining but also considered, intelligent and purposeful. I thought this book was going to be about gender perception, it was the first book I read by Louis and didn’t know his genre or style, but instead I found a beautiful book about perception, kindness, empathy and the ability to change.
Loved this! Such a heartwarming story about how important it is to be kind to yourself and in return you reap the benefits!
This book was brilliant. I liked it when Bradley started to behave better.
I liked this story because its funny at points and because the story is completely different than what it says on the cover like when people say don’t judge a book by its cover. My favorite character is Carla because she helps lots of children for different reasons and because she is a bit funny
Very weird and about growing pains and goin through a lot. 9-12
Excellent book, I love the rest of the books by this author as I started reading them at school.
This story offers the reader a chance to get to know the main character in so many levels. It challenges the reader to see beyond a person’s exterior and see the many intricate and sensitive layers of a person. It is funny, heartwarming and provides countless opportunities for high quality discussion. Excellent links to drama, pshe and writing can be made using this book. A Key Stage 2 must read!
This book grips the reader from chapter 1 and leaves them with lots of questions and feeling disappointed that the book ever has to end.
Brilliant thoughtful book.
ok
I like this book but it needed more intensity and I found it predictable. I liked the main character but he was a bit out of it.
It is a really good book.
Very funny and has a nice ending. We read it in school and I liked it.
Loved this fiction book, it shows things are not always what they seem. A great read for 12 year plus, it looks at the issue of bullying and why bullies become bullies
I love this book.
Read as a class novel with school.
Love Bradley and Carla.
It was a fun book. I’d recommend it if you like Homes by the same author. It was really enjoyable and shows you how good life is.
