Meet the inimitable gentleman’s gentleman, Jeeves …From the moment Jeeves glides into Bertie Wooster’s life and provides him with a magical hangover cure, Bertie begins to wonder how he’s ever managed without him. Jeeves makes himself totally indispensable in every way, disentangling the hapless Bertie from scrapes with formidable aunts, madcap girls and unbidden guests. His ability to dig assorted fellows out of sundry holes is nothing short of miraculous. In short, the man is a paragon.

Carry On, Jeeves features a collection of ten short stories involving Bertie Wooster, a rich and clumsy man, who idles his way through life in the company of other fatuous individuals. Whether at home or abroad, he and his acquaintances get into a series of predicaments from which they lack the innate ability to extricate themselves. Instead, Wooster’s valet, Jeeves, comes to the rescue on each occasion with his customary dignity, efficiency and marked intellect.

Although the tales undoubtedly contain witty undertones of the 1920s era in which they were written, their appeal did not carry forward to me as a 21st century reader. I’m perhaps not gripped by sartorial jokes and the eccentricities of Wooster’s familial benefactors. On the whole, however, they did provide a source of quick and light escapism, albeit with an element of predictability and uniformity.

Worth dipping into if only to encounter some very memorable characters.
