Barney is a solitary eight-year-old, given to wandering off by himself. One day he is lying on the edge of disused chalk-pit when he tumbles over, lands in a sort of cave, and meets ‘somebody with a lot of shaggy hair and two bright black eyes’ – wearing a rabbit-skin and speaking in grunts. He names him Stig. They learn to understand one another, and together they raid the rubbish dump at the bottom of the pit, improve Stig’s cave dwelling, and enjoy a series of adventures that are sometimes wildly improbably and sometimes extremely practical.

Really cool reallyIt reminds me of the Stone Age Times
It's a nice story, but I didn't really get it.
it was a bit confuzzling at the end
I enjoyed reading this book as it was really interesting and I wanted to read more.
It was a good book that made Stig seem like a cave man .
It was good and I liked the part where they went to the party dressed up a cavemen and animals.
He makes friends and has fun
It was a great book and I would recommend it to anyone under 10.
I liked how Stig is a caveman who lived in the dump
This is a lovely story. I really enjoyed it.
I liked the bit about the theives that stole Grannies spoons and how Barney and Stig caught them. And how Stig made clubs and spears and bows and arrows.
I am not happy!!
I thought it was a very lovely book due to our topic that we had witch was stone age but the only reason
I gave it 4 was it got boring and it had not navy pictures.
good
Not for me
I liked Stig, my favourite but is when Barney gets stuck in the bushes and Stig gives him a piece of flint for his new knife
A great timeslip book.
I liked the creativity and the inventions.
My favourite person was Stig because of how protective he is of his friends.
I would recommend this book to all my friends
I really liked this book! The best bit was when the burglar came and Stig helped to push the robber's car into the pit. I also liked the dressing up party when Stig helped Lou (dressed as a leopard) to capture the other leopard that was loose from the zoo.
I like this book because the boy became friends with the caveman and they looked out for each other.
An interesting book my favourite character was Lou the sister of Barney. I would recommend this book because it’s different from other books I have read before.
Read this as a child but didn't remember it and now again as it has been recommended for my Y3 class.
Can't say it really grabbed me - certainly a book of its time as the sister goes fox hunting and some of the boys try to teach Barney to smoke. It has some charm but I didn't like the style and found it quite hard going.
We will see what my class make of it.
An odd book with no real story line, weak characters and a weird message.
Why did no-one else notice and report Stig?
Why does Barney keep forgetting about Stig?
Why was there no mention of a dog until the eighth chapter?
Why can Barney, who is supposed to be 8 years old, not read a simple poster?
Why was everyone so casual about assaults and wild animals?
Not a good message for children, to keep secrets from adults and sneak out of the house to play with strangers.
Definitely not a book I would recommend.
I loved it my favorite part was when Stig tryed to eat a cigarette and thought it was a food
I would recommend it to others
It was a good book I liked when Barney fell into the pit and got tangled by weeds and vines and stig cut through the vines to save Barney and I also liked when Barney went to a party and stig came as his friend and a leopard go loose from the zoo and came and tried to attack the party.
Good waiting for it to be great
An old teapot filled with some kind of oil what is it come on tell me
my favourite character was Barney because he's loves adventures and is allways outside but I also like stig because he is really smart even though he is a cave man and it was really generous of him to give Barney the cave man skin and the leopard skin.
Too great
I loved Stig because he is really clever.I recommend this book because it is really interesting as there is a cave man in the dump pit .Stig is that cave man.
Stig has his own plumbing system.
I love this book 'Stig of the dump' because it's a story that enchants the amazing stone age which happened 4.5 billion years ago. When Barney falls into the chalk pit he finds a caveman and names it stig. Stig's house is the dump where bits and Bobs live. Barney usually goes to stig's dump to visit him. One time Barney makes a chimney out of cans because Stig and Barney made a fire so the smoke can come out. They made a den with the snargets, found a burglar and Lou(Barney"s sister) and Barney went to a stone-age party where stig was there. They even built the Stonehenge. I recommend this book to a friend who loves the stone-age.
