Whitley Bay Book Group discussed The Leopard (in English) in July 2025.
We were a small but select group this evening. A few of us had not finished, or in one case even started the book, but the general view (with one notable exception) was that we liked it a lot. Some of us would have liked more politics and fewer descriptive passages, whereas some loved the descriptions and found the book witty and insightful, with its themes of history and change. Most of us particularly liked the final two chapters which are set decades later than the main part of the book. We agreed it was a different kind of read – slower and more meandering with many digressions and diversions so we were reading in a different way.
We awarded the book between 2 and 4.5 stars, with an average of 3.5.
