Such a thought provoking book that opens up so many questions but works hard to make it possible to be able to emphasise with what it would feel like to be an immigrant.

Recommended to me by a lecturer. Loved every page. The illustrations are sublime.

Love the links to history and the message about hope and acceptance.

I thought I had already reviewed this but I don't see it so here is the shortened version - the colours are good for my Irlens, the story is good for all ages and not too young for those older readers with their varied literacy issues. Its every bit as good as all those recommendations.

A captivating wordless graphic novel about emigration. The book has beautiful illustrations that contain a mythical element to show the bewildering experience of moving to another place in the world that has an unfamiliar language and customs. The book starts with pictures of objects within a room and we then follow a young man as he sets out on a journey away from his family. We share (through some surreal illustrations) his struggles to cope with his new alien environment. Will the young man cope, assimilate and be reunited with his family? There are numerous themes that can be explored within this thought-provoking book.

Endless opportunities! A great stimulus for story telling, writing, drama, inference and so much more. Stunning and intriguing pictures. Can be linked to topics or can stand alone. Brilliant graphic novel, highly recommend for ks2!

The adage 'a picture is worth a thousand words' could not be truer of Tan's picture book, The Arrival. As I find with all of Tan's work, I was completely absorbed from start to finish by the world that he has created. I found myself marveling, not only at the tiny details, but also at the complex experience that he managed to convey so elegantly. Throughout the story, Tan charts the immigrant experience with nuance and sensitivity, by introducing the reader (as well as our main character) to a world that is entirely alien but charming nonetheless. Would highly recommend.

This book is about a dad who leaves to find a good place fior his wife and daughter. People might find it boring because it has no words but by seeing the images you can write a story in your head

A re-reading of this book for the umpteenth time, in preparation for Grade 5 lessons as they are using it as a set text. This book never fails to sound me. It is a thing of beauty and something to savour, linger over, and discover new things every time. This time what struck me most was a sense of hope, of dreams, of kindness of strangers, and of discovery, as well as the challenges that all new immigrants face when moving to somewhere new. The pictures, of course, are sensational but the words they manage to create and portray in your own mind are even better. A fantastic book and one I'll be reading again. Soon!
