My favourite character is Lenny. Lenny’s Dad goes to fight in the war. Before he goes he gives Lenny a badge with 2 animals engraved on it, a lion for bravery and a unicorn for courage. He is evacuated to the country and Lenny needs all his bravery and courage.

A super picture book that will help older KS2 pupils understand the feelings of evacuated children during the Second World War. The illustrations are wonderful and the text draws the reader in. When Lenny's father goes overseas to fight, he gives his son a brass badge with two animals engraved on it: a lion for bravery and a unicorn for courage. After Lenny is evacuated from his home in London to the countryside, he must gather his courage to deal with separation anxiety from his mother and the difficulties associated with living in an unfamiliar place. The book would be a good starting point for a discussion on how experiences differed for individuals/groups of evacuees. This is particularly poignant as this edition includes stories from real-life evacuees taken from the Imperial War Museums.
